the first link - single crank, two conrod, 8 cylinder.
I think its a bloody good idea that will never work.
Good idea in the fact that the pistons on each side, two go up, two go down - so they basically balance each other out dynamically. So your crank only needs to be balanced to the con-rods, not each individual cylinder.
Why wont it work? Look at the linkages on the pistons. Notice the angle that they move through because of the short "secondary" con-rod (or should it be called "piston rod"??). This will lead to huge amounts of side thrust. How to avoid this? Make the rod longer. But then you may as well attach it to the crank....
I liked following the link to the Veyron W16 engine.... looks like 2 VR6 (except with 8 cylinders) that are mated in a V shape.
