Car transport JNB - CPT

I need to get my kombi down in Capetown, so i've been weighting up the options

Train: only within 1 month's time R3000

Truck: R5000

Or Do i just drive it down, and hope nothing goes wrong? I am quite sure all will be ok, she has never let me down, but one never knows, my bus isn't exactly in THE best condition.

So far I've done:
Alternator
Regulator
Wiring
Carbs
All manifold gaskets
Bougi Cords
Service
Brakes
Fuel pump and pipes
Tires

Spares I have:
Fuel pump + piping
Bougi cords
Carb kits x2
Regulator
Fan belt
spark plugs
Points and condensor

Still have to do:
Get foam insert around engine
Raplace fan belt
Replace CV joints.

The engine runs very smooth, it starts first Turn, even after standing for 2 months.

Is anybody taking any cars up to JNB/Pretoria from Capetown that wants to share costs or anything?

Or can anybody give me advice as on what to check on the car? apart from the things mentioned here?

I do need to adjust the gear links or something, it takes some care getting it into second and fourth.

You seem to be going in the right direction with your collection of spares, and you describe the bus as being reasonably sound - if time is on your side, I'd be seriously tempted to drive that bus down. Do an oil change, plot your route, do 300 km per day and stop off at all the small dorpies. You will save yourself some cash, and get to know the bus better and end up with some cool roadtrip memories ......................

I am seriously considering this now... I am planning on taking a trip on the Shoshaloza Myel train up to PTA, then coming back with the bus. The bus has recently been serviced, so should be ok, just sending it to the mechanic next week to check valve clearance, timing and replace the CV joints. I also need him to source the foam strip in the engine bay.

While I am at the topic, Will the cooling be negatively effected if the rear decklid is not intact? the PO bashed it, and the hinges are damaged, so the replacement one I got cannot go on as yet.

Yes, very important for the motor to be properly sealed from the heat generated from the exhaust system. In this way the motor is also protected from dust and other foreign bits that could end up stuck in the fan shroud ............

May have a beach buggy body looking for a lift down to the Cape - contribute to the costs down if possible??

I was thinking of renting a trailer, and brining the bus down, but after a lot of calculations and things, i came to the conclusion that it is the cheapest to get it here by train, or I might havesomeone with a truck that can help me.

Bugandy, try shoshaloza, because it is something like 1500 for a car lower than 1.4m.

I recently came down to Capetown from Pretoria in a car that gets more than 12kmpl, and used around R1400 fuel, + R 93 toll fees. So towing a car, renting a trailer and the fuel usage of the tow vehicle adds up to a huge amount.

By truck, they are delivering it at the Motorvia depot in Eerste Rivier, Saturday morning.

Best choice, this way you save on breakdowns, fuel, time AND it is insured during the trip.....

Hi Bugger

Not stopping anywhere at all, as I am allready in CPT, the truck is leaving from Centurion on Thursday, Anything you want transported? very limited space though, i am actually only allowed 100kg of luggage in the car, and already exceeding it..

Cost R3200 depot to depot transport, within 3 days, train is R2910, but booked full in advance.

I still need to rent a trailer so that my brother can deliver the Kombi at the depot in Centurion
Still need some one working with me to hide my mobile tracking device, so that I can see the whereabouts, and status of my beloved bus..
