Hey guys...

I went yesterday to check this Beetle Image

It appears to be a 68/69, unfortunately I didn't check the chassis number because I was so excited and hopping around like a mad bunny by the car, however one of the owners changed the original 1500 engine to a 1600 twin port..with alternator and late model shroud etc etc..As you can see in the pic, it has a set of VR6 rims and has adjusters in the front torsion tubes...the car has been parked under a tree and is currently not being used
i'm in love with this Beetle, sadly the owner does not want to sell her at the moment... :(
My questions are:
1. On the crankcase,under the distributor, it is stamped "Hecho en Mexico" if I recall correctly..I have never ever seen this on any other Beetle engine..what does it mean?The engine still has the SF** engine number..I checked the crank pulley for movement...NOTHING :D
2.it has a 90 MPH speedometer..did the 68/69 Beetle come with these or a KPH speedo?
3.Roughly how much is it worth? Car got all paperwork etc

Answers will be mucho appreciated....

Very interesting - I think it is one of those Beetles imported from Mexico.

They run on Tequila... *hic* :wink:

OK...seriously now :wink:

It looks like a very sweet Beetle and those VR6 rims suit it perfectly.

I presume the engine was replaced at a later stage by a Mexican casted block, hence the eSpanol you posted.

If you look at the pics I posted of a 1969 Beetle at http://www.aircooledvwsa.co.za/forum/vi ... php?t=2814 you will see that it had indeed a Km/h speedo, but it could have been replaced at some stage.

I'd say anything less than R 12K is a bargain, and it is a perfect foudation for your project.

My 69 is in MPH.
A few years ago (10 or 15) there were a few guys bringing in new crank cases from mexico... you may have got one of those. Its a 1500 with a 1600 afterall, I dont think the car would have been imported

Okay thanks guys..
Due it standing under a tree, the birds have made poo-poo on it, so it needs some work, i hope that the guy decides to sell her at the end of the year..I'll have the cash then..
when I heard it run a few years ago (2004) it sounded smoother than many Beetle engines with not a lot of clattering..good sign

Hi,
The casing is made im Mexico. You might find that it is a "universal" type casethat can be used on type 2 vans and type1 bugs.
For some reason, bugs were fitted with MPH speedo's till quite late.
Wade's late 69 registered in 70 bug has a MPH speedo in it, and it is original.

IMHO the VR6 wheels looks the best on a beetle....If it's a non runner, I'd treat it as that, R8000. If it's running and starting then I'd stretch to R10 000.
