Post by splitfan »

So in the final stretch with my bus and just had it weighed 1140 kg's  !! That sounds like she might have gained some pounds round the mid section there !! I dunno what a standard Fleetline weighs and would be interested to know........Fig :)
My biggest fear is that my wife sells my cars for what i told her they cost !!

I read that 50s model busses weighed between 900 and a ton.

Having a cold drink, and ignoring youre calls.

She was so pissed off with me,....I dont remeber anything after pulling into my driveway,Apparently I hit on my ladys brothers girlfriend and when she gave me bat I told him to dump her. Passed some wildly innapropriet comments then passed out half on and half off the bed

She only spoke to me again on sunday night, she said I kept slurring something that sounded like John

I don't have the factory weights & measures with me, but that sounds about right. My Fleetline panel weighs in at 980kg. The extra weight on a Kombi comes from the rear seats and glass.

There's no reason why 50s buses should weigh a significant amount less than 60s buses or Fleetlines.

If you have to reweigh you bus for registration, I recommend you remove the spare wheel, jack, tools and any clutter, and go to the wieghbridge withonly five litres of fuel in the tank. Your licence fees are based on the tare weight of your vehicle.

@James, yes, buses are surprisingly light without all the safety and luxury features that fatten up modern cars, despite all the plastic and other lightweight materials in modern cars. A split bus is rated to carry its own weight in load; very few (if any) modern commercials can do that.

The original kombi was designed to be propelled by the 25hp(19kw)- 1131cc engine as used in the beetle. Therefore the body had to be as light (and strong) as possible. Use of a wind tunnel was made to lower the aerodynamic coefficient. At about cd. 0.40 to 0.42 for the split and baywindow shape, it was excellent for a commercial vehicle of it's time. Even better than the flatscreen beetle (at cd. 0.48) and curved-screen Superbeetle at cd. 0.44. And better than many sedan cars of the time as well. The later t25/t3 brick-shape kombi was a step backwards at cd. 0.45.

Remember that for overall/total drag, the coefficient of drag must be multiplied with cross-section area, which on a combi is much larger than that of a sedan car.

On a sidenote, some large SUV's have became so obese, that they weigh 2200kg empty and 3200kg loaded. With legal implications few owners understand. (Like when they hitch even a small 450kg Venter trailer, they violate the 3500kg GCM limit of a code EB driver's licence and is then required to be in posession of a truck driver's license (EC1).
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.

It does not have to be weighed each time a roadworthy certificate is required.

The way i understand it is a vehicle gets weighed when a new entry has to be made on e-natis. Like when you do not have papers and register as a "built up" vehicle.
Also when reclassifying the type of vehicle, like when a beetle is changed to a beach-buggy, or a panel van or bus changed to camper.
