my bus('63) has started to slip out of 4th gear when i accelerate. if i hold it with my had it stays in 4th. i know i had this problem with a beetle i had years ago
how easy is this to fix?
anyone know how much it will cost?
i have replaced all the mounts (engine and gearbox) so it is not these.
Start saving now for a rebuilt transmission; in the meantime invest in a short bungee cord to hold it in fourth on the open road (it gets tiring holding it in gear with your leg; ask me how I know).
It could be a bent selector fork, which is a relatively easy fix, but it's most likely advanced wear in the box.
Have you drained the trans oil? Any bits of bearing in there? Basically, any metal particles bigger than a pin head mean you're on the countdown to rebuild time.

I can recommend Erlemanns in jhb. They are not cheap, but they do good work and stand by it. If you visit their workshop you will see that they are doing things properly.
You will save a bit if you take the box out yourself, but be prepared to spend 5k+. You will find guys who will fix your problem cheaper, but if you are taking a long term view get the whole box done.
