At last! My '64 Split Panel!

Post by GavinHuart »

I can't keep it quiet anymore! I've managed to acquire this beaut of a panel van and am ecstatic about it! :flash: Some of you might recognize it as it belonged to Bugger for a time. He'd sold it to a bloke in PE and I've now bought it from them. I've been on the hunt for years for a split and have always had a thing for a panel van. To have managed to get this one is nothing short of a miracle! :D Jacques and Pierre, YOU ROCK! :hangloose: :!: :!: :!:

It isn't with me as yet as the only time they can transport it up is this weekend Sunday, so Monday I'll need a bag of lemons to wipe the smile off my face!

Here are some of the pics as it stands at the moment which were sent to me from the current owner as well as from Pierre.

What I have already arranged is a set of correct bumpers (front and back) and some 14" bus rims - thank you Pierre :hangloose: . We're going to have them spruced up and painted white and will fit them as soon as possible. I'll be on the hunt for four decent original hubcaps soon so consider that hint as dropped  . Pierre gets those jazzy rostyles that are on the bus at present. He's also sourcing a rear seat as I'll need that when bunging friends (or mother) in the back for a drive about  .

This bus is going to be put to work! All being well, a friend of mine is starting up a business which we'll need a light commercial vehicle for. It's be used to fetch and carry catering stock and driven almost every day (not huge distances though). Logos have been designed so as soon as he has the go ahead for the business, the bus will get a few transfers to proudly boast its status and usefulness on the roads :D

There are a few cosmetic imperfections which I intend to sort out over time. For now I want it spit and polished, rimmed and bumpered up, and ready to go!

Hi!

I checked the VIN on The Samba and that stipulates it to be a mid 1963 (VIN 113 0335). I'm guessing it was first sold, or made available for sale, in '64.

Using the VIN to determine the build date is the only way. The registration papers are usually wrong.

In fact your bus is a late 63, as the 63 model year ended at the end of July, with the 64 model year starting in August. SA-assembled ACVWs appear to have been assembled six to eight weeks after the CKD kit was shipped from Wolfsburg.

Thanks fig! So a late '63 it is then! Is the rear glass the correct size for that model?

Can I presume I have your vote on the bus? It's not near original but it is rather lovely, you have to admit

Here's the plan for the look I'm leaning towards:

Nose badge added, hubcap rims (beetle ones are all I had to use in photoshop right now, they will be bus rims), front and back bumpers and a first draught of the logo of the company!
:D

Yes, rear glass is correct for 63.

Well done on finding your split bus!

Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.
