the numberplate shops are not allowed to sell the plates without the predrilled holes. its then not sabs. the law for it to be rivetted to the car does NOT apply to CAPE TOWN according to the guy i bought my plates from. when it becomes compulsary for Cape Town the holes are already there for you to rivet it

I also thought you needed paperwork to buy plates, but as previously said , you can walk into any supplier and ask for any plates you want and they don't even blink an eye.

Ohk, so what I have decided I will do is to simply double side tape them onto bumper as that is the way the GP ones were installed.
If Mr Officer pulls me over, I will ask him about the law and accept the ticket like a man i.e. I will go appear at court and hear what the Magistrate has to say. :drunks:

The Magistrate will say;- .." Guilty young man,.. those number plates of yours, should have been as tight as I am right now !!"

What do we make of all this now?
Hloni, it says "NEW motor vehicles that were registered after..."

Which means literally (not that I think they understand it themselves) that 2nd-hand vehicles registered AT ANY TIME, or 'new' vehicles registered BEFORE that date are exempt.

That's what it means in English. Question is, what language were they thinking in when they wrote that?

GB, my concern too! l am not sure if the boys with the lazers know the rules. I have a sensd that depending on their thirst, laws are interpreted accordingly!!

I drove from EL to Bedford and back Via Katberg and Hogsback for the flower and garden show this past weekend. 500Km round trip. I was pulled over twice with the number plate in the picture below. The cops checked lights, hooter, licence disk etc but never notice my cool elephant.

Sambas in South Africa are good for only 2 things: showing off and sunburn.

And why do you support high elephants in the Eastern Cape?
From fastest to slowest:

Birkin race car, not much is standard
Lotus Elise 111R, almost everything is standard
'75 SP 1600 with a few mods
B8 A4 Avant tdi, towing made easy

LOL! That's so funny and typical. The cops will give you :bn: for the most stupid things and completely miss the bigger things. As an example, Syncromad and I drove from Pretoria to Kang in Botswana and back, towing a second Syncro in both directions, twice through the same border post, got pulled over by the Botswana cops for speeding, even gave one of the cops a lift. A 700km round trip without one rear light working on the bus we were towing. No one batted an eyelid or even said anything. They were all so amazed at seeing a 4wd kombi. I just shook my head in amazement.

I also have non pop rivted plates, pre 2010 waterpumper as my daily, been through 4 or 5 roadblocks this year, no word about the plates. Imho it only applies to cars sold after 2010.

Love the "elephant bus" . Lol, too funny.

My best one was when I got my wife's car license renewal form a few years ago, and it hit me, I hadnt received mine(this was on my previous daily) , then thought to myself, better check the disc as I dont remember when last it was renewed, lo and behold, it was never registered to the correct address, and since I had bought it more than 3 years ago, the license had never been renewed, passed through two roadblocks like that! They just checked my ID for outstanding fines. Renewed both the next day, hectic late fees....
