South African Porsche Speedsters
Hey guys
I know that most of you like your Porsche Speedster . There is an article on my website http://www.aircooledwonders.com that covers all the Speedsters that exist in South Africa and more specifically the Speedster that won the 9 hour in 1958 . It is now owned by Eugene Gouws and probably the most valuable one in the country. I am currently doing some more research on this cars history and will post a more personal story on the car in the near future. Untill then you can enjoy a great article by Eugene Gouws.

Hi Wernher,
That article is great, in fact I took the time to read every thing on your site and enjoyed it so much.
I grew up in Namibia--Grootfontein-- and thats where I first saw these cars --not sure maybe 63,64. Somebody (so called expert ) told me they were racing volkswagens. I can remember at least two of them in town. At the time the white population cosisted of probably 40% german people
You would not remember me but Im the arrogant 18 year old who asked you at a race meeting at Kyalami why you are so stupid to race a combi/bus. .------ But Isuppose many people ask you that question and you had your reasons to do it----- You just smile and never answered me. I could not understand how someone could live with the handling of a bus on a race track but insisted on a bucket seat for comfort .
Anyway I apresciate you sharing your love for the "P" brand and of course the VW with us.Every story on these cars need to be documented.
Now please give us more information on the 550 s that came to this country because there was a few.
O and what is the story of one of Dawie Gous s ex cars being buried with its owner after an accident,Do you know anything about that story.
cheers baron

Thanks for the support and the kind words. The Werner that raced the Kombi you talking about at Kyalami is actually a close friend of mine and he is also the reason I started the website (to capture his knowledge). My name is also Wernher, so its easy to mix it up. He is the last of a dying breed and knows more on VW than most of us combined. When the Museum opens next year , you will have the opportunity to ask him again.
I am arranging a meeting with Alois Klesse soon and 550's are high on the list. Keep checking back.

Re: South African Porsche Speedsters
Not sure about the exact details, but there is some 356 connection with Lindsay Saker - they assembled a few 356 CKD kids here in South Africa or something?

I would love to post pics here and have tried before . It took me hours to do it and it was still wrong. MY brother runs my website( all the Speedster pics are on there), because I am not the best when it comes to computers.
There must be a simpler way of posting pics on ACVWSA ?
Make it more user friendly and I'll be on board.

Re: South African Porsche Speedsters
If the pics are already online it's super easy to post them here. Just right click on the image, slect Properties and copy the url. Then come here and paste the url in between img and /img tags. Done.

Re: South African Porsche Speedsters
Pine
John Bentley wrote an article about the South African assembled 356's. They were not Speedsters, but did come into the country without tops.I just happen to mail the story to my brother this morning and it will be posted on my site today. Enjoy
And BTW there is an original Speedster for sale . The seller wants 1.5 mill . I think the price is spot on and maybe even a bit on the low side . Remember there were only 2922 356A Speedsers ever made and even fewer RHD . This is 1 of 12 that i know of in SA.
