6V to 12V conversion advice, bitte

Post by 1963 »

Hello all! I haven't been here for a while (I've actually been doing work!)

My old lady's '63 Beetle has been a nightmare recently - new battery draining virtually weekly, hardly visible indicator & brake lights, windscreen wipers that bring the car to a stop. Trouble is, I'm in CT and she's in JHB, So I reluctantly decided to convert to 12V for her safety (keeping the original parts, of course!)

Trouble is, she also whipped the car off to a mechanic who doesn't really have much experience of VWs. Long story short, he's had the car for 6 months and says he can't get hold of a part. He sent me this from, I think, a Haines manual ...

Generator:
'1200A' Bosch (6-volt) ........................................111/903/021H
Alternative VW (6-volt) ....................................111/903/021J
'1300' and '1500' (12-volt) Bosch .......................... G(L) 14V/30A/20

All of which is Greek without reading it in context. Can anyone explain what I should be looking for, maybe advise where to find one in CT, any alternatives or better ideas (shouldn't we be moving from a gennie to an alternator anyway?)

Any help greatly appreciated. Vielen Dank! as they say in Wolfsburg.

Lekker, thanks Pine. That'll fit OK, will it? I'll PM Calooker now.

I would also investigate the wireing, making sure it can handle the increased amps with out burning.
