More info on the Hahn SP Kit Car.

Post by retrovan »

Hi Guys,
Trying to find more info on the Hahn SP Kit Car

Found the Hahn Racecraft web site, http://www.turbosystem.com/auto/Cavalie ... hicles.htm , but no mention of the Hahn SP.

Found this on http://www.madeabout-kitcars.com

My car was built from a body that was changed to accept South African parts. It has a 1968 VW1500 pan and running gear. it has a VW 1600 Twinport motor. 5 cars were built of which mine is the only 1 remaining on the road. 2 ohers are being restored for drag racing. The car was built in East London, South Africa around 1972 and is called a 'HAHN SP'. Any information as to the origins of the car will be graefully acceped. Thanks Clem

What other info have we got on it.

Maybe the East London guys can dig out info on the manufacturer that made then in 1972 to 1974.
Would be nice to find the moulds

I think one of the biggest challenges would be to manufacture the glass for such a kit car, if it is not directly sourced from another car?

In the last pic-
Wonder if they dropped the floors or raised the tunnel/ handbrake/ gearlever-base?
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

It uses a ford escort glass if i'm not mistaken. The south african ones were adapted to use locally available parts. I will try and get you the details of the owner that brings his out to the amatola run. We were speaking about the glass and its either Ford escort front and back or Ford Front and an Opel back window.

I was also told that the other 4 is around still. The builders son is rumoured to own one.

Thanks for the info - the Opel Manta rear window (upside down) looks like it could work?

...and the Ford Escort Mk1 front window looks about right!

Don't be too hard on yourself...it has an escort (Ford) window and it leaks oil...there is relations there somewhere :-)...Just joking. It is fun to get these pieces of the puzzle together. I am 2 years down restoring my Puma and has gathered some facts over the years. I love tracing the history of the car and to find the life the poor car had before landing up with me. I have read hundreds of articles on the design of the Puma to understand why the car looks like it does and I bet your car has a similar interesting story. Good luck on your project boxerulez!

Ihave never heard of this car but it looks a lot like the AZTEC and some panels may be identical. Kitcar builders like to steal shapes and contours from each other, and most of them will use glass from cars of its design era.
The best way to find glass for these cars is to make widows from hard paper or very thin soft wood (balsa wood)- and then make a thin f/glass mould over it. Fit shape and cut the mould to please your needs .Then take the mould to old car glass suppliers and see what matches. Agood glass merchant can cut any glass to shape even front windscreens but he may mess up one or two before he gets there.
cheers baron

I am pretty convinced the Hahn is based on the FT Bonito - perhaps even moulded directly from it

When you have the moulds, you could change the windscreen fitting, to enable an other more popular car glass to be fitted.
This would be more desirable, due to the fact that you can then Glue it in, making the car more rigid.
There are so many "Glue" in screens now, that you can even enhance the style completely.
Now all we need is to find the moulds.....
One of my friends has a 2 seater GOLF Glass body moulds, should post some photos.......
