There is no absolute answer to this question. Ultimately it is your car and you may do to it whatever you wish. Cars mean different things to different folks and opinions will always be a reflection of personal preference. I appreciate the effort and detail that someone is prepared to put into his car whether it is a standard or custom restoration. Different tempraments & skills may be involved but the same dedication is required to get it right. ('Right' also being a fairly elastic concept...) The character of the car should be taken into consideration i.e. a pristene low mileage beauty should rather be kept that way whereas one that has seen some action may be more appropriate for customising. Just my opinion based on preference.
