Wheels...and clearance. :(

Post by Merlin »

OK guys, here's a tricky one for you...

1. The '66 is running widened 356 rims. The back fits nicely in the fenders, but the front sticks out, but about an inch or so...

2. My bug (currently EMPI 8s) is the opposite. The front fits nice, but the back is out by an inch or so. I run 195s on here, F + R.

Now, I'll be fitting 5.5 15" Randars on my bug in the near future, wanting to keep the 195s. VZi and TS both have posts about 195s fitting the 15 5.5 EMPIs, and Randars fine...although my inch-to-mm conversion shows 7.6 In. needed. Wierd, but true.

I have no idea what the offset on a Randar is...yet.

# Why does the '66 stick out in the front, and do I need to narrow the beam to fit it properly?

# How the F*ck do I get the back wheels in on my bug, more importantly if I have this problem with the new rims... :?:

# What effect on handling does a narrowed beam, say 4", have on a car. Keep in mind that my bug is a toy and I like winding it up and sliding around.

:( Thanks, N.

The 66 has short axles (as did all 6V beetles) and the 67 has the longer ones, the same as all the 70's beetles

A narrowed beam will lead to more over steer on the corners, handle worse than stock. If you want to tuck your rears under the fender get a set of short axles.

...OK, fair enough, but does fitting a pair of short axles in any way F*ck around with my IRS setup?

How do I fit the front wheels in on the '66?

Thanks Rui. :)

Cheers, N.

If you are doing your disc brake conversion at the same time, get the hubs made up so the wheels can bolt on and fit properly under you fenders. Or otherwise try to get the hubs made so that they would move the tyres in more than needed and then get spacers made up to fit properly

I've just been looking over Dave Rowley's pricelist...

Randars are 5-stud so obviously I need to change the disc hub/rotor setup.

I've got discs all around at the moment.

I may have to get the things here and then spend a bludy fortune getting Dave to do 'something' to my bug to get it to all fit...Eish.

I want to avoid spacers at all costs.

I guess I have to wait until the wheels get here and see where I sit.

Btw, I've decided against the Escras and gone back to the Randars.

I wanted 16", but don't like 17" on a bug.

The Randars are 15" 5x5 and by reading many posts across the Google sphere have found guys running much wider than 195s on them.

...doesn't make sense to me, but hey, if it works for their toy bugs, it should for mine.

Thanks, N.

Alright, deal almost sealed, but...

While the 5.5s (EMPI and RANDAR) run 195 and wider on 5.5 easily, I've just learnt that the RANDARS are 5 across.

Any idea whether this will fit a 195 comfortably without bulging, etc.
