Fomula Vee Rebuild

Post by JamesD »

Sup guys, as you know, we picked up the Vee from Triton. Here are the pics from when he found it...

img1100yo.jpg
Then Triton did some work on it, and the work he did was fantastic! the dash, steering column and front clading were done exceptionally well.

IMG_2118.jpg
Then we stripped everything yesterday and began the rebuild. Full paint off and respray of frame, front suspension the works

the frame was riddled with holes, my word, but those got welded up. Got resprayed today as well, but no pics yet. car should start going back together tomorrow. alot of work to still do. we only fixing up the front as the rear still needs some modifying.

And on the bright side, the Birkin just just fits on the trailer, well, until i install the wide track suspension in a month or so...

:hangloose: Looks good!

I'm very fascinated by the 'reverse linkage' of the gearbox, can you please post some closeup pics?

not sure why you don't see the pictures, I uploaded them to ACVWSA. Probably a 1600 twin port will go in with a 36 weber to learn with at track days and then we will modify the engine to match regulations as needed.

Will snap some pictures later or at some stage Pine, we will probably remake the linkage since the current one has been modified to fit a water pumper at some stage and is rather floppy and hard to operate. AND the gearbox is an SFAS, which means Pierre might get a call if we need to go faster down the straights before running out of revs...

Thanks, James! :hangloose: Is the 'shift pattern' the same as a standard Beetle, with the gearbox the other way around?

I am actually buzy with 2 Vee ttransmissions but they are not the SFAS type. They are the 4.125 R&P and a 0.93 4th gear which is a shorter than STD 4th according to the regulations for vee but are you guys going to enter Vee Races or just play at Track days ?

But Bring it Anf Yes I can Do It

Would be cool to see it in action on a Sunday track day. Let us know and we can come and watch and set up a braai.

Standard shift pattern Pine, I'll show you how it works some time. basically you pivot around the bottom of the gearlever not the middle like on a bug. this gives you the correct throw direction.

Pierre, are those boxes for aircooled cars or the later water pumpers? we staying aircooled and looking at racing in the vee races and historic single seaters.

Sounds cool, can do a braai at a track day Klaus, just gotta get the car ready to go racing first. think they want to stick an engine in and run it next weekend...

Just a few things to note so far, the suspension at the front isn't lowered, the shocks are just so short they are pulling the whole car down. think it needs a selecta drop to lower the front "naturally", should also improve the handling a lot.
The steering wheel is a bit too far forward, it needs a spacer to bring it backwards so you can sit comfortably in the car.
The seat, not so comfortable or the safest, might take the seat out of the Birkin and chop it shorter and stick it in the Vee.

Nope, Even if i knew i wouldn't tell you, cause some one will get it into their thick heads that that is a cheap and easy way to lower their car... So dont even ask for a part number!

Looking really good there. I've always wondered how one of the vees would run with a close ratio gearbox and 200hp t1 engine :) I'm sure it will be fun to drive
