Plug leads

Post by jmvv »

Recently Petrus developed the annoying habit of ejecting one of the plug leads when cruising on the highway.(a 1600 single port gets mighty slow when it becomes a 1200 three cylinder or 800 two cylinder)

Initially, I thought that It had just worked loose as the plug leads were less than a year old.

On closer inspection, I found that the retaining clip in the plug lead had come off and was stuck on the plug. When checking the remainder of the leads, I found that all of then had the same problem. I also noticed that the rubber seals on the leads had hardened and distorted to the point of being totally useless,

This was a kit sourced form Goldwagen

I decided to stop messing about and fitted a set of Bougicords from Midas. (They had to be specially ordered, but it was worth the wait)

I know a lot of people swear by Bougicord, but I think they're garbage and I'd always rather use old style copper cored leads. Bougis are made of silicon, which builds up resistance after a couple of years, causing arcing and shorts from the leads. Also, the air seals that seal the gap between the plug and the cooling tin are utter crap and perish within weeks. I've had similar problems to those you describe, but with Bougicords.

It seems to get harder to find quality parts every day. So far, the best plug leads I've found came from calooker. They are copper cored and have heavy duty air seals that don't leak or perish.

I've been using bougi's for years now... no problems at all.

Stay away from Toni and those cheap EMPI leads
