Kareerkloof is nice, but a little pricey, warmbaths is ok,Hennops pride is still one of my favourites,as is Mountain sanctury. Iv got a camping and caravaning book,il look all the campsites up and post them.

On a different chord,I went to this small camping place in Lindeques something or other on three seperate occasions, usually middle of febuary, and every time I go there for a quiet weekend away, its packed to the rafters with these goddam "bus drivers!" Making a noise, reving thier engines, playing old rock music as loud as possible and drinking alot. They go as far as setting car parts on fire! So I wouldnt recomend going there if you looking for peace and quiet.

Just my 2c.

Yes, best avoided on the third weekend in February if you don't like a good party and gathering of noisy bus owners and their cars!

But, just so that everyone knows, Vaalplasie campsite is always open and is usually a perfect spot for peace and quiet. The fishing in our stretch of the river is also excellent. ACVW volks are most welcome to camp any time (and there are a few clever ACVWSA volks who are regulars), and don't forget there's a VW bus museum on site and we now also serve the best pizzas anywhere on the Vaal river! Camping fee is R75 pp pd.

@Fig: That type of free camping is usually known as "boondocking" and there is a large group of people that live like that, many retired but others just trying to save a buck. (Freudian slip there - while proofreading I realised that I had typed "boobdocking" :D )
I was not aware that your place is always open for camping - I thought it was just the one weekend per year.

Agreed about the Warmbaths/Bela Bela Aventura Resort - it has lost it's appeal for me with the busloads of school kids screaming and running through the camp all day. And on my last visit some vandals removed all of our guy ropes while I was away from camp, causing our tents to collapse. Many of our things were ruined and soaked during the afternoon thunderstorm, very miserable having wet clothing and bedding that night...

Also agree on the municipal sites; they used to offer a guaranteed clean, maintained, well priced campsite in most towns and around most dams too. My last visit to Witbank Dam (a previous favourite site) showed a large level of neglect and lack of care. Vandalism had taken care of the ablution facilities, mirrors all smashed, basins and windows too, tap handles missing, whole rolls of toilet paper stuffed into toilets etc. And a leaky sewer ensured a ripe scent when the wind changed direction. The "potable" water has been contaminated too so don't drink it if you visit - take plenty. We were all charged different fees for the weekend too, all arriving at different times. Very odd but we all got proper receipts so I suspect they just don't have a clue.

I read on a local 4x4 site last week that they had experienced 4 hijackings/muggings/attacks over the holiday season at the Hennops 4x4 trail. Not sure if that adjoins the camp grounds or not but it's something to consider before going there.

I went to Zanandi on the weekend,I really like what I saw,the ablutions were clean, the pools were well maintained, and the grounds were clean. The prices were fair, although they classify busses as caravans,so its R40 per adult and R120 per "caravan." I didnt see any 4x4 tracks, all the roads around the camp site are pretty flat,so lowered busses and bugs wont battle to much.

Its proximity to JHB is what really makes me like this place, and a 5 min walk will get you to the upper deck,10min drive will get you to the dam wall. Its an awesome place to go to when you want to dissapear on a friday afternoon and make camp before sunset. They dont have a pub or resturaunt, but you can buy booze from the kiosk/reception/pool room/store room thing theyve got going on. A captain and cola will set you back R13 and a beer R8. Fire wood is R14 a bag. All the camp sites have electicity and water.

Camp sites......

Popped up to Buffelspoort this weekend to open my account for the season of my other habit. Been up there a few times but paid more attention this time around. There are some nice spots there and it is probably the cleanest water in any dam in the province. Good for swimming and boating.

The campsite is pretty spread out, stretching a few kilometers, so you can get some really nice private spots. I will be organising a run up the there in the next month or so if anyone wishes to join.

Yep, went up on saturday for the morning. Nice camp spot. There is a busier section towards the dam wall and then a quiet secluded section to the right of the picture with the tree. Goes down a few kilometers.

Got some nice boy mooring spots, and some nice areas to put kayaks in and setup for fishing. Gonna take a cruise out the in the next month of so with the bus if any one wants to join. It can be accessed by from the rustenburg freeway as well as from the back road and over breedt neks pass
