BMW or Volvo brake upgrade for type 3 and 944 ??????

Post by retrovan »

Hi guys,
Have seen this on The Samba, has any one ever looked into this possiblity.

They talk of a bolt on of the 318 disk brakes onto the late type 3 and 944 or even an Volvo upgrade.

from Samba....."Look into the 320i calipers, that is a common 914 upgrade. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticle ... lipers.htm

And....

So, from what I gather, this is a direct bolt on deal with the late spindles.

You gain two more pistons over stock. The 2002ti has two brake lines (if you look, you can see two bleeder valves)

So, the benefit is 4 pistons over 2. Better braking.
And...

why not jump ahead of that curve and swap to volvo 240 calipers. it what the bmw guys do for an upgrade. can be had for about half the price of the 2002tii caliper new or if your resourceful probably $5 a pop and pick and pull and a $13 rebuild kit. but rock has some loaded rebuilts for less than $40. pretty sure some of the 914 guys have done the 240 caliper swap to....ken....

Have seen a mod on a beetle using BMW E36 brake components, but had a custom caliper bracket.

Another option for the hub is from a Nissan 1400 bakkie same bearings as T3 will bolt on but needs a custom calliper bracket. Probably the cheapest option by far but the disk is tiny as is the caliper, another idea to toy with.

That would be great , Please.

Would like to look at all options, more in forum info then only my own use.

These options would be great to test and report on.

Only the front
go to your local spares place and check out the wheel bearing kits they normally shows which cars take the same bearings and that is how its done
