Hi guys, the names Gareth and i am in Cape Town. I have a '74 1600 beetle which I am hoping to turn into a beach buggy - as soon as I have the finances. I have been browsing the firum for a while now and have really enjoyed it. There are some really fun characters around here . Hope to have my own project post here soon.

Welcome Cleotaps.
Are there any ACVWs left in Botswana?
I stripped safari screens and other bits off a double-door panelvan in Gabs about 15 years ago. The next time I went by the bus was gone and that was the last time I saw an ACVW in Botswana.

I Googled upon this forum the other night looking for any info on Autovillas (type 2) and immediately connected with the good vibe here. That might expalin the ..er.. slightly emotional outburst on that particular evening. I haven't had many vw's in my life besides my first car while a student 1986/7... It was a 1979 golf 1500 GLS (sky blue) quite a zippy little thing. Only problem was with overheating/ thermoswitch ..eventually put a manual switch on dash to turn fan on. It eventually overhearted one too many times and i didn't have the bucks to sort out the cylinder
head so... my boetie had just finished his national service and needed a car...... I bought a bike...
And then 18 years later (about 3 years ago) after travelling to Cape Town in a Nissan 1400 bakkie to visit my other boet I decided i needed more room to breathe! Sold 1400 for 20K bought 1973 VW panel van 10K. Jaa that's more like it .. could'nt wipe the smile off my face for at least a month. Couldn't understand why i had been stuffing around with other cars for so long. Not entirely true. There were definite highlights, one
being a 1973 Ford ranchero V8 .. amazing vehicle.. saved my life definitely once..another story .. another time. Met a chap Gerald who has a ?? panel van the old ice cream van type with a raised fibreglass roof? Anyway when i climbed in there i didn't have to duck! mmmm...Scanning Autotrader about a year ago and as I saw a picture of Autovilla (non Luton -don't really like the Luton type, overpowes the VW a tad, too much Jurgens not enough VW, besides I travel light!) Tried to sell panel van,
ended up giving it to another buddy who was stuck for transport and who i knew would cherish it .. and is. The family comprises another couple of non VW old cars and an old bike. (and a newish bike i might sell before i kill myself)
So that's how i got here (short version). I'll try searching the forum first before just blurting out questions that have already been answered.
