Beetle type 4 twin turbo project

Over time I've gathered a bunch of parts.. so I think it's about time to start with my long term project. aka Kalashnikov (big firepower in a small package)

Now here's the plan:
1974 VW Beetle (that I've already got as a donor)

It will be dropped to the floor, riding on a set of 15" fuchs with 911 discs. Raised transmission and adjustable front end with pie cut chassis for plenty caster.
Caged interior with two race seats. Only the bare minimum bits to keep weight down.

The power plant is a type 4 big cc engine (that I've already got)
-Cu engine casing
- 80mm stroker scat crankshaft
- Carillo H-beam rods
- Web 86b camshaft
- Scat lifters with oil hole
- Cromoly pushrods
- Magirus Deutz sleeves
- 103mm forged flat top pistons
- CU cylinder heads that's been opened with 45mm and 42mm valves
- 12:1 compression
- Dave ingle throttle bodies with 8 injectors (1680cc x4 ; 575cc x4) and boost boxes. Methanol
- Garrett gtx35 turbo (that I still need to buy)
- Xcell 38mm waste gate
- Xcell dump valve

The gearbox I still need to look at... It def needs a locker diff as I want to attempt drifting this baby.

That gives about 2666cc's ?

The Germans welds an extra cooling fin to the type 4 head. Then they remove the top fin on their cylinders to make space for this extra fin.

Reason is that this gives added strength to the head.

You think a type 1 gearbox will handle the torque of that monster turbo engine?

If affordable taller diff ratios than 4.57 were available for the 091 kombi box, this would have been a nice option...

With the engine running methanol the extra cooling fins might not be needed. Methanol help a lot when it comes to cooling.

I've also acquired a bugpack 3 stage dry sump system, the higher volume of oil will help with surge and keeps the temp down.

Whether the gearbox will hold up.... time will tell. Bugger might have to help here.

The reason for the extra fin is not so much for cooling. Main reason is for added strength of the head structure to prevent warping/distortion when larger bores and higher compression ratios are used. This helps to maintain a good seal between head and cylinders.

Usually this fin is cut from aluminium which is thicker than the existing fins.

Drifting might be a little harder to do since its a "shortish" wheelbase and to make it worse, the weight is all at the back..

I was thinking of something like a copper ring between the cylinder and barrel.... or a flame ring like the 964 Porsche engines. I do not really want to weld to the heads as the valves and seats have already been done.

With a lock diff and plenty caster I think drifting would be possible. The steering needs to be super responsive as well... maybe a quick steer rack would be in order. My dad raced a VW bug on the dirt oval years ago... and it seemed to handle pretty good going sideways.

This gives you plenty caster which helps give camber when you turn the wheel.

I have not really decided on what colour to paint the bug... depending on my budged when I get to that point. I would love to go for the Candy max orange as used by suzuki.

Progress is still very slow...
But I've found some nice goodies... 1.4 ratio roller rockers. These are almost too pretty to use.

hmmmm, those look like Pauters... nice. Check them over and especially for coil bind and the rockers hitting the retainers. The "Marine" had some issues with Pauter rockers a year or two ago.
I also saw a sterring adapter a few days ago online somewhere that increases steering rate. I'll see if I cant find it again and send the link.

This piece simply bolts onto the steering box arm, extending it, and increasing the movement of the tie rods for the same steering wheel input. This is NOT recommended for street use, but is great for off road use, or even for Auto-X.

I'm not sure who made those rockers as there are no markings on them (it'll be awesome if they are Pauters) ... We'll check for coil bind, maybe the heads will need some machining to use them.

As for the steering, I intend using a steering rack from a Opel Cub and a multiplier like this.


I have tried the stock steering box before with a adapter, but it becomes real heavy to turn.

As for the turbo, I'm still looking for the best option. So far it seems to be a Garrett GTX3076r with dual scroll exhaust housing. I'll flow more than enough hp and will come in real early. I would like a GTX35... but that might become a little too big.
