It's "slightly" cold but the work has to continue....


I have cleaned up the heads and port-matched them so now it's replacing the head and fitting new gaskets after the cleanup.




For those of you that were curious, this is the Ultra-Spark electronic ignition fitted:








Now my hands are frozen... so valve clearance and the valve cover will have to wait  ;D

Since the weather has improved I ventured into a bit of heart surgery to track down the reason for my wet gearbox & bell-housing cover...

I also took the chance to change the oil seals and gaskets.



Quite a bit off oil inside the bellhousing

Luckily a dry clutch

but.... behind the flywheel...


The rear bearing carrier was bolted on very loosely...
Next... when the snow stops... again.... the gearbox....

\no they are actually in good shape... they came with bevelled edges... looks a lot better without the grease

interesting the way diffrent engineers come up with a different solution to the same problem.
Case in point the fiats heads are very similar to the beetle but look at the pushrod tube seals as well as the head studs. The fiat has equal length headstuds which should make for a much more even torque distribution on the head. This feature was found in very early VW engine but was lost over the years. The main seal and its housing makes for much easier servicing I like the idea

I've also compared things Armand because of the similarities. The pushrod tube seals actually "roll over on themselves" when they are compressed by the heads & case which causes them to seal a lot better than if just wedged in a hole...
About the seal housing:
They call them "bearing carriers" as you buy it with the bearing shells pre-fitted. Of course there is only the front and rear main bearings, no centre bearing so the crank runs totally on the two outer bearings.
Another interesting feature is the hollow crank-shaft which ends at the timing side in a centrifugal oil "filter"... It works!

BTW it was designed by the same guy who did the V12 for Ferraris in the 50's, Aurelio Lampredi

Assume one could replace main bearings without having to remove the crankshaft?

Exactly. The bearings(different sizes) come fitted with the carrier and then you can press-fit new seals when required.

OK so this is what happens to an unsynchromeshed first gear if you don't come to a complete stop before you change gear...

A BMW boxer engine or Steyr Puch boxer would be more suitable.
