Cape Argus Cycle Tour, 1978

Post by Pine »

A mere 525 cyclists gathered on October 28, 1978 for the start of the first Argus Cycle Tour in Strand Street, Cape Town. Only 446 cyclists completed it 104 km later in Camps Bay. More than 35 000 cyclists entered the Argus this year...

Pine, not quite accurate. That might be the official "commercial" Argus tour, but the very first on had something like 35 riders. Hopefully I can get hold of one of my mates who has done every single one.

I think he was 12 yrs old when he did his first one.

Cool post anyway.

By the way I did 15 of those rides. With a personal best of 3hr 52min
Why do we celebrate the guy that invented the wheel??
Surely we must celebrate the guy tat invented the other three

Thats me somewhere in that Pic. I Completed my first Argus at age 11. Think I crossed the finish line as one of the last 10.

This Year I done a 3:06 and made the Top 1000.

I only rode one Argus... 3:45. That was the day after I ran the Cango Caves Marathon in a PB of 3:45 in order to qualify for the Two Oceans that year (1992, 5:20)... That was a whoopee weekend. The Argus is a fantastic event. I hope to do it again some time.
