1974 Bay Window

Hi guys, new to the forum.

I need so advice on a 1974 VW Bay Window Kombi. Its a 2000L and it has been standing for a bit, however, the old lady would like to sell it. It has a rust on the roof, around the gutters, and rust around the rubbers of the wind screen. It starts, and has a new engine. The rear left tailight is broken, and it does battle to start. Tyres are still brand new, and paintwork is faded, but original. Could i possibly get an estimate of what it is worth?

It is very difficult to estimate the worth - its like asking what is the lenght of a piece of string.

It depends on how much someone is willing to pay for it, or what the owner wants for it.

Is it still licensed and on the road? All paperwork correct? For me that usually makes it worth a bit more. Also check rust elsewhere, like engine bay under battery, the footwell area in the nose of the bus (under front carpets) floorpan, rocker panels etc.

My best guess would be maybe R15- R20k. but its just a guess !

Hi guys, as promised, pics... as i say, the lady says its a 1974, and the papers are all in order. The interior is neat. Its a 2000l. But from what i have heard... these engines are terrible? apparently they drop valves.
Whats the verdict guys?

Do you want to buy it?

Offer R3 500.

The engine may have issues you dont know about. If there are serious issues it could easily cost R15 000 to R20 000.
Worn suspension and brakes can near R10 000 to rebuild.
If you need a panelbeater to do the bodywork just remember a bus is huge and will be pretty expensive.

I personally like the later 2000L busses and with all cars if looked after well will last well, but this one will need spending, hence the low offer.

She said that the engine was replaced, however, its been standing for 2 years... no battery either.

Have you seen the interior - how neat is it ? Any pics ? The bus does'nt seem to be rotten, but you will find some nasties when you remove the front windscreen, was definetly cared for most of it's life but seems to have suffered with the previous owner ? Are the gutters rusted through ? Do you have access to it, get underneath, lie on your back and check it out properly.
If it has'nt run for 2 years, the motor is probably poked. Don't rush into it, I agree, offer R3k - see what happens .............

i think it's a beauty. what does the writing on the side say? i think it'll be a great project bus!!
offer low - you can always go higher but almost never go lower....
