The hardest part of a job, is kicking yourself.
Haha so true... the other hard part is starting again, its not easy to have to do something twice... But I can tell you now I wont do it again I will see how far I get tomorrow, but I only work on it during my study breaks so it takes time 4 more exams left then I'm on holiday
Okay, after a few squished fingers and the invention of a few new swear words... I have got the motor back together and into the car. There is oil pressure but I can't start her up, because of me changing from a Genny to an Alternator the carb does not fit. I'm going to try make a spacer and pick up some new, longer studs tomorrow. Then I can see if it will start up again
I spent the whole day yesterday shopping for a beetle for a friend and eventually found one I am now waiting for the spacer for the carb to be laser cut, and hopefully it should be here but this afternoon or tomorrow morning Then the rear lid has been sprayed with undercoat and I can start buffing it for paint. As far as the rear fender go, I was going to try get some from someone in PE but he is in hospital so I will have to get them some other time...
Work is going slowly but its getting there, I should be at home for the next while so hopefully I can get some work done
Discovered that the Fuel pump has packed up. So I dug out a spare and cleaned it out and put it on. The spacer has still not arrived so I can't put the carb on but I finished painting the engine lid and it looks good
I have to write my NBT's on Saturday so I can't do any work then but hopefully I can make up for it tomorrow and on Sunday...
I will post some pic's on Sunday afternoon, hopfully I will have the engine lid on by then...
Today, I did the following...
Gave the engine lid a few more coats of paint
Painted the rear apron
Welded a few patches on the rear right fender
Replaced the 6v wipers with a set of 12v (made a mounting bracket)
Set the timing, valve clearance and points gap
Finished putting on the exhaust
Mounted the petrol tank
I went to go fetch the spacer for the carb to find that the holes for the studs have not been drilled, so it looks like I have to wait till Monday before I can mount the carb and run the motor in...
I finally own 2 running beetle's Scrappy is running really really well, but I can see a slight oil leak starting at the 3rd push rod on the left which is a bummer.... now that I raised the carb the air cleaner doesn't fit and I have also had a major problem with fitting the deck lid, its LHS mounting bracket has a big hole in it where there is meant to be a bolt hole... so I have to short that out some how.
I'm picking up a set of rear fenders on Tuesday an I'm going to be away for the weekend. once I have all 4 fenders on and the running boards I'm going to be really happy.
Ya, I did not want to use it either... but when you don't have the cash for a new one there is not much I can do, and the motor is a 1200 which means that I would have to buy a new one again when I have the cash to convert it to a 1600... For now I just want to get it on the road then I can start spending money on fancy new exhausts
While I was looking at some beetles the other day, someone had just cut off the silencer and replaced it with a golf's one and it sounded really good. I was considering going to look in some scrap yards to try find a decent silencer. Any thoughts?
