Well this morning thought I might drain the oil from the gearbox
Came out all goooooey and there were a few metal bits

So went in a bit further and found this
Cage on the gearside bearing had lost a section
Dont know if this was from the bolt that had sheared or otherway round
Further inspection showed a little surface damage on the inside where the loose bolt had been rolling around
Luckely no damage to the teeth
Seems Gear side bearing is shot so will replace that
the other side will probably be done as the whole lot is open

Also found what looks like a date engraved on the crown wheel think thats the gears name
Possibly an fitter back in the day just doing some graffitti ????

Inside of the box also coated in a dark layer of oil - seems there might have been some heat somewhere along the line

well the joys of doing a restoration
never know what suprise will jump at you when you next hit the workshopppe

Sorted out driver side handle and lock as the old one was smoked
A bit of a fidly kinda job
First realised how old I was getting as it took me about 5 minutes to find the location of the grub screw
Note to others doing this job dont hit out the bottom pin as it is the locking pin - you will damage the barrel
Main pin that hold the handle and holder together knocked out
Grub screw removed and barrel out
Key into new barrel
File away some of the locking teeth
Test fit for smooth operation
Lube
Grub screw back in
Minor adjustments to the new handle
Assemble
Drive back main pin

Thre you go one new door handle that locks

Well the wheels on the bus are supposed to round and round

Gearbox blues continue
If only it was just that broken off nut and bearings that needed attention

Got the new bearings and put them in

New 3/8ths bolt and drilled a hole in it for the wire
Bought a torque rench and set the bolts to 6mkg
Started to wire up with some welding wire - clockwise set to keep the tension

That was yesterday
So this morning - removed the oil seal
This took longer than expected but got it out - definate heat damage as it was baked
With all the twisting and turning to get the seal out I heard a rattle in the danger area of the box
Took out the drain plug and had a feel in there with my finger
A little gritty - thats not good
close up plug and put in some power parrafin and wash around for a bit
Get my wash backet and drain the box
Turns out the gritty is alot of metal - felt like a gold panner but for the wrong reasons
Still a rattle so some more shaking and fingering and then the shit hits the fan
These 2 pieces of obiously iside stuff are now outside

Can see that the one on the left has a fair amount of wear
Seems I have found the reason for the bus being parked under the tree those years ago

Bugger will be getting a Pm

So hopes of mechanical first will be paused for a bit

Seems the rotissarie for the Manx will be next so I can crack on with the repairs to the pan

Remember that after replacement of those bearings the crownwheel alignment need to be checked and shims adjusted/changed as required.

Got that just trying to figure out the maths to match up

Took the outer cover off to get abetter look as the gear shift was stuck
Everything in Neutral and free
Engage left top lever 3rd /4th ?? all fine engage neutral and engage back to neutral all free
centre lever feels a bit tight but does go in and out but then when its back in neutral its not
Need to engage 3rd or 4th then back to neutral then all is loose again
Hopeping that the bits are from the selector
Thats the first bit -the second will be where to find another one

Seeing that you are a technical guy, and as the box's condition is sort of...you know...,
And you are already that far.

Why not loosen the pinion bearing and separate the box for inspection. Remember to carefully mark everything where necessary and keep note of shims. Then show us the pictures.
