Seeing that you are a technical guy, and as the box's condition is sort of...you know...,
And you are already that far.

Why not loosen the pinion bearing and separate the box for inspection. Remember to carefully mark everything where necessary and keep note of shims. Then show us the pictures.

Dont think Ill go that far - there are just some places that I will not tread
The box might be sort of .............. but i dont want to &%^&&#$&#%$ it up anymore by just having a look
No good having the engine and no gears to push the bus up the hill
Seems the better plan is to get the box to the Van Wyks in Villiersdorp and have them split it open then take some pics if I may and then post the diagnostic for those of yous that might have or could have the same issues with chunks of metal falling out of the drain plug

Well seeing that I had to be in Vyeboom today thought i might take the box to Andrinos
So armed with some choc chip biscuits I arrived at tea time
A cup of coffee and some biscuits over a chat about the history of the bus with Oom Andre
Fetched the gearbox from the bakkie and put it down on the workbench
Asked oom Andre if I should leave my contact details as I was about to leave
To my suprise he did not ask for the numbers but grabbed his trusty spanner and started opening up
"Kom Laat ons kyk wat hier aan gaan "

Opened up and immidiattely saw the problem spacer washer on the one cluster was shot
All the rest perfect
In all his years of experience he says that this is a first !!
So a scratch in some boxes and we find the replacement washer
He hands the whole lot to me and sends me off to the wash-bay to clean and dry everything
Washing up done
Back to table and we put the whole lot back together again

When it came to the ZAR side of things Oom Adre said - this is not for you but for the bus now get out of here !
What a pleasure to spend some time with a man that is very pationate about the work that he does
Pity there are not more of these class of people in our world

Oom Anre also recons that this is the first time the box has been opened up

So there we have it a day filled with some firsts

That is probably one of the earliest "non vertically split" boxes. VW probably had teething issues there that they sorted out later.

That looks very,very weak! Is the threaded bar not to small. Is it not gonna snap??????

Surely 12mm threaded bar would of been better ( It looks like 10mm in the pic).

Hr the ends are standard - lht and rht the idea was to thread the solid bar but the the problem was the lht tap with the 3/8th tread
So just opted for the weld in version
Maybe when the bucks are a bit better will get the correct pressed version

Little by little we get there

Was looking at the king and link settup and saw that the rubbers were a bit shot
A few enquiries and nothing exept some real expensive ones from the uk
Found a piece of rubber pipe
One times air saw and there you go
