Just my 2c worth.

Exactly - As a newbie in this scene please don't listen to purists bleating about originality and all that jazz.

Buy something which you are comfortable with, do with what makes you happy (within reason of course  ) and just enjoy.

There are some stunning custom Fleetlines locally (a certain brown and white one comes to mind), so I scheme that if you go with a Samba replica which is done right, you could be on to something very interesting :D

A fleetline is the perfect basis for a custom, I would think twice about cutting up a German Bus to create a custom - whereas there are still quite a few fleetlines around that could be had for a custom project.

At the end of the day. It is.

Your money. Your car. Your time to mod and build.

I was just reading on a UK forum how a guy bought a barnfind Oval from Finland or Sweden and is making a 10 second drag car out of it. That certainly raised a few hackles but he's happily building his dream interpretation of an ACVW.

Well. Good luck with your future endeavors.
So instead of considering knowledge gleaned from people who generally have a better idea of how to look after a vehicle as it was intended, he should listen to the nonsensical tripe you waffle on about?

If everybody listened to you, we'd probably end up being surrounded by Golf-powered, stickerbombed hacks with turbos on every corner and a sound system approved by Phonak.

Thank something holy for free will.

The German spec Uitenhage assembled kombi's typically have 3 windows and a blank panel behind each front door.

A Fleetline nearly looks like a 23 window Samba, it just does not have the 8 small roof windows, among a few other details. Like the pressed front VW emblem, different right hand side body panel and flimsy side cargo doors which are unique to the Fleetline.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me, the 11 window kombi's and panel vans are nicer than original Sambas. Not as rare, but far more practical in hot and sunny South Africa. Especially when used as a daily driver. Less of that "fish in a fishbowl" feeling and cooler inside. Just my own humble feeling. Of course a genuine Samba has more "car show appeal", and is worth much more. Although, to me, all aircooled VW kombi's are nice.

By the way, the 3 windows in each door counts as one. So an early samba actually has 27 windows.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

Licencing can be a nuisance, but it's not a major issue. Basically you only want to know that it's not listed as stolen.

Just consider the fact that outstanding licences and penalties can be costly if it may be the case, but if it’s unknown, expired, hasn’t been licenced in the last 30 years etc., you can sort it out.
