From reduction box to Beetle box???

Post by Eugene »

Ok..So what does it take to do this??? Is the bus installation wider than the Beetle setup?? Has anyone here tried this? I have a split willing to undergo the operation but no expertise.

I haven't done this and wouldn't. But I hear people who do it use Type3 axles, not Beetle.

Something you might want to consider: A bus is considerably heavier than a Beetle/Type3. Beetles/Type3s have one rear wheel bearing at each hub. Split reduction boxes have four bearings each side, so a straight axle in a Bus is going to be taking a lotmore strain on the bearings. Also, you lose the gear reduction of the RGBs, so you would need a more powerful engine.

This is not as easy as it looks.
Bus spring plates are about 50mm wider apart than bug spring plates
you need hybrid swing axles made from pre 67 short axle bug axles and late post 67 axles I made a jig to do this and have pretty much figured it out
Might try it on my pick up as and when it is road worthy.

BTW the spring plates needs mods too (anybody got a spare set?

The web page of Bus Boys in the US (http://www.bus-boys.com/) has information and instruction sheets on the conversion for the Type 2 to Swing-Axle or IRS. They sell a kit for the conversion that includes the longer axle tubes (Swing-Axle) and information on other parts that are required.

if you go the Bus Boys web site, http://www.bus-boys.com/fact2.htm, there's a fact sheet on the conversion. They seem helpful and I'm sure they'll answer any questions you have. I don't have direct experience of it, but it's very common in Europe and the USA makes long distance travel tolerable at decent speeds.

Just got mail back from Bus Boys saying "you lower the bus about three inches and you can go faster". Which I suppose sums it all up.
