Re: Surplus engine parts
I had both heads bead blasted and cannot see any cracks. One of them appears to have been welded at some stage. The valve seats still look OK. I haven't measeured the valve guides. The cooling fins are intact.

Re: Surplus engine parts
From what I can see, both heads seem to have inserts fitted to repair damaged plug threads, one head has had oversize exhaust seats fitted, 3 combustion chambers have either had huge detonation issues, or worse, something bouncing around loose which can lead to bent valves. Could be 043 castings as it has smaller valves or 113 castings which are 1300 heads?
Can you confirm?

P/N 043 101 376 H. According to 'How to overhaul your air-cooled VW engine' by Tom Wilson, this is a Type 1, 1600 twin port head, originally with 33mm inlet valves & 30mm exhaust valves with 9mm stems.
This particular head had the word "MEXICO' cast inside the rocker area. It does not appear to have inserts in the plug threads. The valve seats & guides appear to have been changed at some point as 35.5mm inlet valves & 32mm exhaust valves with 8mm stems are now fitted.
Head #2:
P/N 113 101 375 A. According to 'How to overhaul your air-cooled VW engine' by Tom Wilson, this is a Type 1, 1600 twin port head with 1.5mm step, originally with 35.5mm inlet valves & 32mm exhaust valves with 8mm stems.
This particular head has inserts in the plug threads and appears to have been welded in the area of the inlet ports. 35.5mm inlet valves & 32mm exhaust valves with 8mm stems are fitted.
Neither head shows any visible cracks. Looking at the corresponding pistons, I agree that the engine must have suffered from quite serious detonation. Obviously these are well used heads in need of machining before being used again & I believe the asking price of R250 each including valves, valve springs, spring washers, collets & complete rocker shaft assemblies markets them as such. I you require info regarding their history please PM Pine as both heads came off the Khaki Cruiser's ex engine which I subsequently bought voetstoots and overhauled/modified for my Squareback.
Regards,
Adriaan

Re: Surplus engine parts
Last chance for any of the above. Everything thats left will be going to recycling (scrap metal) next week due to storage space constraints.

Re: Surplus engine parts
Will give you R300 for the lot to save it from becoming scrap metal, much more than any scrap dealer will be prepared to offer. Will be sacrilege if you scrap the stuff.
