Drusky, I think Ron summed it all up pretty well.
I will go into it further, but it just becomes pointless politicised semantics. You either see the skewed demographics because of (ongoing) history in this country, that allow a segment of our population to enjoy a standard of living better than just about anywhere in the world, or you see a hard-done-by-we-was-robbed-and-aren't-good-enough-anyway attitude. The choice is a personal one to make. And it is a universal one - you can be unhappy anywhere in the world because it comes from inside of you, not your circumstances.....

My frustrations come from the fact that despite all the skills and resources we actually have available, the sum total (as in finished cars) most often ends up being less than the parts. And then we kick ourselves when we are down by arguing that we were second best to start with and justifying our mediocrity because of it? THAT is the bullshit attitude I want no part of.

No wander my B@lls are bleeding, I am on the fence on this one, totally agree with all of you, but differing with you all at the same time......

I do believe how ever that the final blame for this is mind set.

Here, we restore a car for the eye, what the eye does not see, .... , and when called out on it, we find an instant explanation.
But at the same time, we do not have the facility that the "Rich" Highly populated country's have as so far as to dip strip and refinish old body's to new.
And before you all shout, "But we .....", no spraying the hided parts is not returning the part to new.....

So the result is that we either do what we can, equipment restraint, or money restraint or mind restraint.

So the point is, that in the other country's, we CAN expect a better finish, whether you get it is an whole new thread by it self.

But here we know, there is a limitation, and you tend to be happy with something not so high quality. and we all programed to this mind set, unfortunately.

That is why I do believe we automatically offer a low price, when buying, as you know you WILL land up redoing the whole thing anyway.

So maybe I should get off this fence, before bleeding to death, and stand on the side of ..........

Herman, that is a defeatist statement, of note. You're running yourself down and blanketing everyone else with the same canvas.

I read it twice and each time the same thought occurred to me...I hope this poster never acquires any restoration project even slightly out of the ordinary. I've seen your website...you clearly have above-average skills with your hands, so why the run downhill?

With reference to this post, I am commenting on the skills and attitude aspects alone.

This thread is about generalisation, not individual performance.
I do know my own ability's, as well as my own weaknesses, but also not a guy that lives in a fantasy world, I accept reality, and embrace it, to make my self a better person, and improve myself because of it.

I also applaud the performance of others, how ever great or limited, and strive to assist where possible, as I have in my life received assistance by the broad shoulders of others that I have built my ability's on.

Yes there are exceptions, to many to mention, just on this forum alone, but as Dursky started this thread as a generalisation, I have kept it a generalisation

I don't really think I am negative. Negative people crash before they get going and mope in a puddle of their own despair. I am a realist. I tend not to polish reality up and look on the bright side of life. I see the obstacles in my way and get busy on overcoming them. As I go you will hear me say, "Check out this obstacle, it's going to take, this much amount of time and effort to get past it." I will probably even say, "This obstacle is a huge bastage!" I don't go for positive thinking at all. I do however think that if you can do something, I can do it too. It may take me longer, it may cost me more in school fees but I will get it done. Unless you're a pregnant woman.

I am thinking of building an exhaust for my 1600TP Ealry Bay but I am not one to reinvent the wheel. Is there anyone in ZA putting out nice SS exhausts for our vdubs or do I have to import?

I like my ACVW with all the performance I can get but not barking loud. A subdued rumble is good for me.

Topic chance... you can get a good S/S from Tuffex exhausts, they in north end, on the split with Grahamstown road and Main street
