Bilstein Shocks

Post by Blitzkrieg »

Are Bilstein shocks worth the money?

Do they improve the handling of the car?

If you lower a car, as in slammed, would it give a better ride?

In combination with a camber compensator, what would the results be?

I use KYB shocks on my beetle, works like a charm.

When I started racing my beetle I had std shocks in the back and found myself loosing the back end through fast corners. (Zwartkops corner right after the pits).

Installed KYB's on the back and problem solved.

I can still remember one track day, going out to show the subaru boys how a beetle can run and I lost it into corner one, right infront the pit exit. As I lost it a chap was sitting in the pit exit with his R300k odd subaru. He literaly shat his pants, reversed back up the pit straight and went home without drving one lap. :)

I have not tried the camber compensator yet... running a wild Z bar in the back. 21mm I think that is fastened to the axles with rose joints. So there is no wheel tuck. Also running thicker torsion bars in the back.

The ride quality is very rough though... almost no suspension travel, but I dont care.

I'm building my Fastback to be a cruiser, but with relatively good handling for the occasional blast around the big Z

where do you get a Z-bar from?

Z-bars on buses!? :o

'67+ bugs had Z-bars...I've never heard of a bus using one. Ever.

...and of all the ones I've come across, I have yet to find one.

Shimming Z-bars (bugs) has a similiar effect to an anti-roll bar, in that it creates resistance f/t instead of under load as designed.

Bilsteins are rather pricey, I think I'll also buy KYBs then :D
