Car vs. engine, your opinion requested, please...

Post by Merlin »

If you were to sell a car, but keep the engine, what would you say should go with the car and what with the engine?

Starter motor? Car or engine?
Thrust bearing? Car or engine?
Clutch? Car or engine?

Thank you. :)

Starter is part of the gearbox so car.
Thrust bearing is part of the gearbox so car.
Clutch is part of the engine so engine.

or what is agreed upon...
From fastest to slowest:

Birkin race car, not much is standard
Lotus Elise 111R, almost everything is standard
'75 SP 1600 with a few mods

Normally if you take the motor out, and every thing that had to come out to take the motor out, stays with the engine, whats left on the body, goes with the body.

The starter will be for the flywheel, and should the next owner want to fit a different flywheel, he will not be able to use the starter.
And the starter is there to make the engine work, so it stays with the motor

You can not bench start the engine without the starter, but you can turn the body into a trailer without the starter......

Only my opinion......

And the air cleaner? Think usually it would go with the engine, unless it's a type 1 engined baywindow or split kombi. There the large body-mounted air cleaner might stay with the body.

If we were to hold a poll to see where the starter went, (When members sold or bought complete used aircooled vw engines in the past.)
My prediction of the results would be that in most cases the starter stayed with the car.
Staying Aircooled is so much nicer.
Do'nt assume anything- (While doing fault-finding).

Yep, Bugger, acVW.

Thanks for the replies everyone. :) I was looking for a collective view on something being debated and have now gained the outcome I expected.

Belated reply,

WHEN ever does one buy new or reconditioned engine or sub that has a clutch fitted ? ------ NEVER
These are only included because they are forgotten in place or not needed, or are a negotiated part of the deal.

Clutch may be bolted to the flywheel , but is actually a seperate component of the transmission system

Q

Is a beetle aircleaner part of the engine?

Is a ghia aircleaner part of the car?

Is a kombi aircleaner part of the Kombi?

Hehehehe
