I need to purchase a set of basic tools to start working on the Fasty.Basic tools meaning a set of ring spanners, sockets etc
What brand is of a good quality and reasonable price?
I believe that Gedore tools are of a good quality and I quite like them, but they are rather expensive...
More importantly, what are the basic sizes that I would require?
John Muir's "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot" has a great section on tools required to work on your ACVW.
With tools, my policy is always to buy the best I can afford.
If you can't afford Gedore, seriously look at the "cheap" Chinese tools that are swamping the market; there's lots of good stuff there. In general, anything marked "Chrome Vanadium" is good quality.
My favourite tool brands are Stahlwille and Snap-On, but I can't afford to buy either.

Kennedy is great... they have a great 3/8 socket set.. I find the 1/2 a bit big for most applications..
and then a set of gedore combination spanners. then some screwdrivers, allan keys, pliers and you should be good for most things... then buy as you need.
agree an all accounts, coming out of the trade..buying tools was a good hobby!! an expensive one though. Fig hit the button, first prize is Stahwille and snap on, but alas, killer on anyones wallet. Even the second hand dealers have realized this, but now and again, you hit the jackpot!!. I pretty much buy second hand only now, dependant on use. if it moves, go for good quality and spend, ratchets etc. if not, buy the most expensive you can afford, not the most expensive. Gedore is good, but getting pricy too. i bought a mastercraft power bar the other day, gedore was twice the price!!
What i also did for the last few years is that i dont buy everything at once, if i need this size socket then i buy it loose ans o i go on, monthly I spend about R150 on tools, you get expensive tools that reguire few months savings, I have a lot of hand tools, over R30000 worth, but i must say i also inherit alot of it
have nothing on the cards now, but have a red beach buggy in sight that I want
Blitzkrieg!! what you also can do and i do that alot is attending Garage sales and pawnshops, i alos gave my name up at our pawnshops with a list of tools that i still reguire, and if they get some of it in , they usely calls me firts.
