60's Rally Badges
Hi everyone.
I have been given 3 60's Rally badges by a friend who says that I can get half of what they sell for.
Is anyone interested in making an offer on one or more of them?
I'd like to sell all 3 for around R800. Not in mint condition.
Please make offers or give me ideas of where or how to sell them.
Thanx
Cyndi

Re: 60's Rally Badges
Wow; this is a bit awkward. I am trying to get the best price and so I am going to wait to see what I can get.
These badges belong to a pensioner that we met because he also has a kombi. He really needs the cash and because these badges are far more scarce and were only ever issued in very limited quantities we would like to get a fair price. We think that they are worth between R300 - R400 each.
The owner has also offered to give me 50% of what I manage to get for them but I couldn't only give him R150; I think that I would rather give him the whole lot.
No disrespect you guys and thanks for the offers but I think that i'll have to wait and try for some higher offers.
Thanx
Cyndi

Re: 60's Rally Badges
Good call young Lady.
I lift my Hat to you for your willingness to help someone more needy then your self, and I am sure others will offer market related prices, in aid to help a fellow Volkser.
Please give us the dates on the Badges, if they are embossed on them, will help.
Thanks
Herman

Re: 60's Rally Badges
Those badges should have some interesting history behind them as they would have belonged to someone who took part in these rallies many years ago.The Total and Amatola rallies were big events in their day - late fifties and sixties. Probably mounted on the original rally car. Would the current owner know more about them - rally participant, what car ? Would be nice if they were originally on a VW.
The original Amatola Rally began in 1958 and was run under the auspices of the South African Motor Rally Association and the Sports Car Club of South Africa. The idea to hold a competitive rally in the Border region of the Eastern Cape was conceived by two office colleagues and organized by a group of determined local motoring enthusiasts, who had long before recognized the Border region’s suitability for rallying.
One of the biggest obstacles, besides bureaucracy, was the raising of prize money. A minimum of 50 pounds had to be attained with the rest of the expenses being covered voluntarily by the organizers and local businesses. Caltex saved the day with a huge donation of 300 pounds and the event achieved immediate popularity and credibility and from then onwards it became known as The Caltex Amatola Rally.
The rally soon became so popular that by 1959 it had become the biggest event of its type in the Union of South Africa. That year there were 121 contestants in all and the route covered 1400 miles in two days. The rally soon gained a reputation for being tough, but fair and accurate, as it was run along many gravel roads in the region. It was nothing for competitors to cover over 1200 miles in a 24 hour period.

Re: 60's Rally Badges
We can ask him and see if he knows the history of the badges.
The 'Caltex Amatola Rally' badge has 1962 embossed on it
The "Tour Natal Rally" badge has a small badge that attaches to it that is 1964. There are holes for 6 of those small badges.
No dates on the 'Total Rally' badge.
Please remember they are not mint, they have definitely been on cars.
Thanx
Cyndi

Re: 60's Rally Badges
Hi Terry.
Thanks very much.
As soon as we receive the money from Fred, we will take it to our friend.
We are going to take a picture and post it, (hopefully he'll have a big smile on his face) so that everyone can see him and his kombi!
