Hi there, I'm Andre from Kuilsriver in Cape Town. I recently bought a beetle for my daughter who thought she wanted it. Turns out that she didn't really want to wait long until the car looked decent. Anyway, so I'm letting my 1.8 Polo stand a bit while I try my hand at this restoration thing and if I can accomplish seomething that looks like a nice ride, my daughter can use her mom's Hyundai. I must say that I absolutely love the project forum and will be regularly looking at the amazing work you guys do. I have a few questions though that I will ask in dedicated forums.
Anyway, I just thought I'd say hello.

Just joined the forum. Sarel Wagner (member here) introduced me to the forum. I am also from Centurion
I bought my first '78 model SP back in 1980 and had it for 6 years. I stayed with the VW brand for another 7 different models of Golfs and Jettas until 1994, but that first love always haunted me. A red SP would always catch my eye and yes, I totally want to have one again. There is one standing under a tree in Naboomspruit for years now, It seems to be driven regularly - every time I pass through town, it has moved to another spot in the yard.... This weekend I am committed to go chat to the owner.... Let's hope he sells it to me.

My name is Ross I'm from Cape Town, and my first vehicle that I have owned- and still do, is a 1978 Bay window with the 2 Litre engine and twin carb setup.
My parents gave it to me for my 18th birthday in 2010 and I have done EVERYTHING to her, Engine redone, gearbox redone, new shifting setup, and took the brake master cylinder and booster off to get repairs, should be putting it on this coming weekend.
Soon I'll be doing the tie rods and new brake hardware all round, brake pistons hubs etc, plenty to do
so by January I should have started and finished with the body.
I'm pretty stoked with fixing her up myself, but I would really dig it if I could get some direction from the senior members as to where I can buy important parts in Cape Town.

Welcome Ross. You need to visit Grand Slam (Jurgen and Esme) in Somerset West, they will have what you need and can also help as others on advice. They do a great breakfast on Saturday mornings started by me 6 years ago

Congrats on your bus Ross, sounds like you are on top of your project, always best to be patient and do it right the first time around - but for now - pics and a new thread under "my ride" or "projects" ASAP

Hi, my name is Len. I am from Nelspruit.
i have a 1968 VW 1600TL type 3 fast back car and a 1973 VW 1800 automatic transporter bus.
I have no engin for the fastback, if someone can advise me on where to get this specific type 3 engin
i will really appreciate it. I did search the web but rediculous prices between R30 000 to R40 000.
The transporter bus - engin re-done but can't get an oil pump. Under construction, so...... no windows, upholstery removed (very bad state). will appreciate advise on repairing rust on the window frames without cutting the body. Body still in very good condition. Any rust otherwise is where the battery is situated. Started the engin, is in running condition, carbs need to be sinchronised. Mechanical fuel pump replaced with electric fuel pump but still need to make a plan to prevent carbs from flooding - any advise on what i can use after the fuel pump as a return valve back to the fuel tank when carbs are full to prevent flooding?
I am willing to swop my transporter bus for a engin for the fastback BUT it has to be a 1600 TYPE 3 vw complete engin in running condition, it does not have to be PERFECT, I am willing to repair it myself as time goes by. At this stage i have to pick between the two vehicles due to my financial situation and guess what? The fastback wins!!!!

You will find a type 3 engine harder to find then a type 4 (kombi) engine
Fits well and longer lasting
you will probably find on at your local scrap yard

is your Fastback the one that was parked for years in Krugersdorp in a garage there? If its is the same car, I went to go and have a look at it back in 2011.....Solid car which needed an engine....That car does not need a lot of work....Easy car to fix and drive
I have some Type 3 bits and pieces which may help you in your build which you can have.....PM me and you can arrange collection.

My Name is Steve, I'm from Durban, and I'm as green as it gets when it comes to VW newbies. I kind of inherited my first ever air cooled car this past weekend in the form of a '75 Bay Window Panel Van.

This Van was owned by my girlfriends mom, and as she needed to get rid of it due to lack of space, but no one was interested in it as it hasn't run since late 2008. It was then passed on to me as i have a tad bit of mechanical knowledge(be it only of inline 4 fuel injection engines), and seeing as I am a sucker for fixing things, no matter if its worth the effort or not
This van however, will definitely be worth my effort, as i can imagine many miles of smiles to be had.

I am from Centurion and used to drive a 1600S "Super Bug" beetle in Varsity. I just bought a Super Trike with a 2.0l Kombi motor that, according to the previous owner, has racing pistons, a balanced cam and a cut flywheel installed as well as a 4 into 2 exhaust system. The gearbox is 4 speed VW. I might need some technical input from you guys, as it's been a long time since I worked on a VW aircooled motor.
