Calooker, calooker wrote:Installing disks is easier than doing the standard drum thing, the kit will bolt on with no problems. Things that you need, in your case I would only do the front for now, it is much cheaper than the rear.
The parts needed are all Golf 1
:set of disks vented or solid (new solid is about R90 each)
:set of callipers second hand (so manny around you could get it for nothing, there are two types, they both work)
:set of new pads about R100
From the kit (contact me I can organise for you for R650)
:set of calliper plates
:set of hubs 4x100 or 5x100 PCD
:6 hex screws
You need to get a set of standard beetle seals, inner bearings and 2 custom outer bearings, grease and locktite.
It will take not more than 1 hour to fit each side. If you want to retain the original wide 5 beetle PCD you can get an adaptor plate for that. If you go for the 100 PCD you will need 2 adaptor plates for the rear about R450.
You can even use vented VR6 disks & callipers.
I have seen a Mazda 323 rwd & BMW E30 & E36 front disk & hub used on a beetle
So reading this post gives me some hope at least for the wife's Super's brakes. Out of curiosity I did a quick search on eBay for Golf 1 disks, and came across this auction where the guy states:
Here is the auction... So my question is this... if the Golf 1 disks can be upgraded to Golf 2 disks, surely that means that the Golf 2 discs can also be used on a Bug?MK1 GOLF GTI 256MM BRAKE CALIPER AND CALIPER CARRIER UPGRADE
GREAT IF UPGRADING YOUR BRAKES FROM
239MM TO 256MM JUST FIT MK2 GOLF 256MM DISCS
AND JUST BOLT ON THE CALIPER ASSY
EASY AS THAT
Thanks for your input!

Re: Brake upgrade
If Golf 2 can be fitted to the back, can they fit the front...in my case, in place of the stock '67 kit?ZeroAxe wrote:So my question is this... if the Golf 1 disks can be upgraded to Golf 2 disks, surely that means that the Golf 2 discs can also be used on a Bug

Front ventilated disks work on both Golf 1 & 2 the larger disks may need mods to the calliper bracket but if they claim that the larger disks are bolt onto the Golf 2 axle then the same will apply on the calliper bracket I get for the beetle mod, never done it that way so I can't be sure.
The larger disk in the add seems to be VR6 size.

I'd really like to show you the setup on my bug when you get a chance one day Rui...wondering if you know it's origins.
I have no idea what's on the back of my bug...presuming Mk 2 Golf.
I'd just prefer a matching set, and ventilated's always nice, although brakes have to wait...the bug's costing way too much.
VR6 is overkill imo.

VR6 would be way over kill for a bug, a VR6 golf probably has 30% more weight to bring it to standstill, than a bug, so I don't see the need for such big disks even if you are pushing big Hp. I know of rotary beetles with 300 Hp and more and the golf 1/2 brakes do the job. Its all about the load that needs to be stopped the heavier the ride the bigger the stopping power needed, a golf is heavier than a beetle, I hope this makes some sense. If you are circuit racing then big brakes make more sense as they have a larger surface for cooling/braking, for a road going ride stock golf on a bug is more than Ok.

Sweet.
...but I still need to know wtF I've got bolted onto 'em. Hehe.
What bugs me is the availability of stock '67 kit.
That said, we've recently been lead to believe that my bug may have been an OG 1300.
It has, apparently, stock-type '67 discs up front, but everything there is new.

Ok what I know is that the GOLF Guys Use a spacer for the caliper and use VR6 vented discs but have to drill 4X100pcd reason being disc stays cooler longer for racing even street Racing
Here in SA the Mrk 2 2L 16v from +- 2000 model had bigger front disc`s but if you wanted to fit them you had to get the whole stub assy because of the bigger disc the caliper bracket was moulded further out wards but the caliper as far as I can remember stayd the same ?
What exactly do you want to do
Have you got GOLF/JETTA and want to upgrade brakes
Pierre
