Old School Customs?

Post by IMPI »

I was reading a new to me Ultra VW and came across a letter from this guy called Tim Otte
Claims he has a workshop in South Africa called Old School customs.
He then carries on about the fact that prior to his arrival in South Africa we never had any lowered VW's and only repaired cars with newspaper and fiberglass
Does anyone know this Dude
Maybe we can invite him here

His shop is down the road from Grand Slam......keep meaning to pop in and chat to him......in the meantime I have heard that he is a little arrogant (your quoted comment seems to fit this) - I will try to not let pre-formed opinions sway me before I have actually met the guy......

I wasn't trying to slam the guy...... It just seems to me that everybody in the whole damn world think they know better than us are more educated and has something to teach us usually in a arrogant sort of way.
BTW I have never repaired rust using fiberglass in the 30 or so years of building VW's and my first lowered bug was in 86.....Whereupon my uncle told me: Old news I already had one in 76. He then gave me a copy of the 1976 HotVW's magazine which detailed the California look, I still have that old issue

Common guys, we all know his right, South Africans cant restore or properly mod a car. Bugger actually colours all the cars he does with crayons,

YES!!! Tim Otte of "Old School Customs" does have a shop just around the corner from "Grand Slam"

Although he is a very "different" kind of guy, he came to SA about 3 years ago, with his ideas, be they what they may......... 8)

He does buy spares from other volks, but will only sell to you if you have a full restoration done in his shop ....... at GREAT expense to say the least :(

He asked us to do some mechanical work on one of his vehicles, never pitched up as he doubted Juergen's ability to do the work  that after only 51 years of Air cooled experience direct from the factory :?: :?: :?: :?:

He has also recently chopped up aka BUTCHERED one of the rarest Type 3 Karmann Ghia's, by lowering the roof - looks KAK & is such a terrible waste  in our opinoin, but get to meet the guy & draw your own conclusions

I saw it too, I think it was in the December or January issue, they have a pic there of the razor he butchered, looks almost like he made a bakkie of the thing too, when I saw that I already wanted to kick his teeth in, then I read the bit that went with it and thanked the powers that be that he's in CTN and I'm in JHB.. My first beetle was lowered flat on the ground up front with a nice stance when looking at the lowered back, that was not as far back as some lowered ACVW's in S.A. but it was a few years back in 1998..
I think the best thing for him is to f*ck off back where he came from unless he losses his arrogant streak and realize that us 'backward' South Africans can probably teach him a thing or two about metalwork, tweaking mechanicals (even lowering suspensions) and building f*cking awesome aircooled dubs..
Just keep on BUGGIN'

I have stopped there before, personally I think he's an exporter.

His work can be considered an abortion. I don't really get it, they make some panels, repairs, modifications with a grinder and welder (ok, not fibreglass), but then covered this hideous job with 20kg of body filler.Wheres the skill in that?

He also considers himself as an expert in creating "patina" cars. P36 sandpaper, brown spray paint and a week in the rain seems to do it for him.
