Split Beetle

Post by eddyr »

How many Splits Do we have in South Africa and what year models?

“first” Beetle off the production line in Uitenhage on 31 August 1951 does not have a badge because VWSA tried to fool us all as the car was NOT the first Beetle assembled in Uitenhage but rather a fully built up one sent by Wolfsburg at the end of March 1951 so it would not have had a badge. The car behind it on the production line does have a badge as it should have as it was built from parts sent from Germany in June/July 1951. That car should have been the first one —– why it was not used remains a mystery but I suspect it was not ready on the day and the photo I have shows it did not have seats or other trim.¬-by John Lemon (http://www.aircooledwonders.com/feature ... not-first/ )

Muds/Eddy,

When you guys get online together trouble is brewing...ha ha. I agree it would be more than nice to know how many Split beetles are left. In Cape Town there is another Pierre with two well restored 51 RHD Splits. They were restored by Ernest in Springs. I believe the information is good since it comes from an impeccable source.

Eric van Staveren also worked on a very well restored 51 RHD for a while. Believe Muds still posted some nice pics of the vehicle a while back. Saw that car for myself as well and it was a thing of beauty. Matching engine chassis(pan) and body.

There is mine, another 51 Split in RHD.

Eddy, isn't there a registry for these type of historic vehicles or are you trying to establish one?

Eddy. I think it's a great idea to know how many splits are in SA. I love South African history and sharing it. Do you currently own a split?
For anyone that is interested, I have an registry at http://www.aircooledregistry.co.za/ . It would be great to have everyone on board.

Eddy,

There will always be haters everwhere. The nicer your vehicle the worse it gets. Cars in the Park 2012 was nice, but the some "VW" people were on their worst behavior on than day. Will never go to Cars in the Park again with vehicles if it cannot be helped. Their comments about my vehicles ranged from "rebuilt " to "ag ek kan daai selfde beetle koop vir R25000-00"! Eddy you got a very very nice collection and it is what you think what matters. You were wrongfully accused of exporting the 51 Split that you sold to me so many a moons ago. Shame on them......"Hans" is still under a nice winter bedsheet in my garage in South Africa of course...ha ha. :hangloose:

Wernher,

I would like to have my vehicle on your registry and will drop you an e-mail soon.

YvaneS,

Will ask my buddy the phone number for Ernest in Springs. Ernest is one of the best VW restorers in SA. He is a perfectionist when it comes to VW's.

Thanks for the nice words. You will see My cars almost never get posted by other people on this site....

I bought 2 beetles this week a split and a oval. When I got the call, the person said that You have always been nice to me and you are a honest collector, I give you first option on my cars....

People still have to prove that I exported something, I sold a Split window SC to Brian, not even knowing who he is, That's split is still in SA....
The Split Bus I bought from a forum member from PE, is a rust bucket that the spares I sold to Travis for his collection of busses....
