With the R3.5k rattlecan "rebuilds" being sold on gumtree people need to be very cautious when buying "recon" engines.
In general, unless I have physical evidence of an engine's provenance, I treat all used engines as scrap and pay accordingly.
If you want to sell a used engine as reconditioned, important information to make available to potential buyers includes:
* Who built the engine
* Who did the machining
* What parts (including brands) were used (provide receipts)
* Sizes of cuts to case, crank and bores; info on cam reprofiling
* Modifications (eg, "hotter" camshafts, big bore P&Cs, etc)
* Compression ratio
etc, etc, etc
Caveat emptor.
