Type 64 Comes To The VW Challenge

Could that be true? Better believe it! A crew of four U.S.A. craftsmen have been building the body, chassis and engine for what is a recreation of the most beautiful Volkswagen ever crafted, the infamous 1939 Volkswagen KDF Type 64 (aka Type 60K10) Berlin to Rome racer.



This very special project began two and a half years ago and is now 75% complete. The chassis is rolling and the front and rear windows were recently fitted. Currently the top is off while a six point cage is assembled for competition in land speed racing similar to the Kalahari Desert Speedweek top speed event.



The car will compete in the 36hp Challenge Unlimited 36 category and the teams goal is to capture the fifty year old record of 129.68 miles per hour set by Dick Beiths Pepco puffed lakester in 1963 at the fabled Bonneville Salt Flats in America. Minimum speed goal is 130 miles per hour.



Wolfsburg Wests Okrasa style heads will be part of the potent big bore 36hp engine being developed to meet and then exceed their goals. Our 36hp Challenge "1" Club hats are off to Bruce, Dave, Whitey and Elbert.

So what you trying to tell me is that this forum is more about your nationality than Volkswagen and our passion for these iconic cars. It's always so funny how South Africans hate the Americans, but yet so much want to be like them.

This is a top notch project that we could all learn something from, being shared with us freely - isn't that enough in itself? And we have a land speed racing event that can be as good as anything anywhere in the world, yet it risks dying out without support.

In terms of sheet metal shaping we do have more than enough guys in this country with the talent and potential to do world class work - if more of us would get our collective fingers out of our asses and do stuff instead of (often) bitching about how good everyone else in the world has it....

This looks like an amazing project and I'm sure there are many who feel that way who don't feel they have anything to add to this thread. Saying nothing adds more value than arguing about crap.
