Important announcement
for VW owners
After several months of lobbying by the newly elected chairman of the VW Club of SA, Mr Fred Ibbs, Sanral have announced that several old model cars are to be exempt from e Tolls in Gauteng. This announcement came after Mr Ibbs presented SANRAL with a compelling reason why old cars should be exempt. The first of these was that surveys and sales figures have proved that most cars older that 35 years are not driven very often on freeways in Gautemg for several reasons. Also almost all of them are likely to be owned by older citizens who are not in a financial position to pay the toll fees. Furthermore, these older citizens have more difficulty reading and understanding the SANRAL e tolling statements, and also usually also use very old cell phones not capable of dealing with a SANRAL sms statement. This has led to lots of frustration by todays motorists when they find the call centers and SANRAL offices full of these old school motorists. This leads to time consuming delays, especially for those drivers driving in blue light privileged convoys and such. However, SANRAL have identified another problem, and that is how to make sure that over 35year old cars are not captured by camera and automatically invoiced as they pass through the gantries. In a unique co-operation with a civilian motorist they have welcomed Mr Ibbs’ suggestion that as VW Beetles are so easy to identify, and as there are still a significant number of these old cars populating the left hand lane of our motorways, the camera’s will be programmed not to photograph any model of VW beetle. So as not to confuse the issue, Mr Ibbs thought it prudent not to enquire about the new Beetle, as it is a similar shape. Time will tell how these cars are processed by the cameras. Although there are other cars which occasionally take to our motorways, causing frustration, especially up hills, the VW Beetle is the only car that can be identified by today’s sophisticated cameras. A SANRAL spokesman said he expected the technology to improve quite rapidly, and they may soon be able to add old Land Rovers to the list. Any motorist with a car which is more than 35 years old may apply for exemption under this new ruling, provided he presents himself and his car in working order at one of the SANRAL customer centers every 7 days when his SANRAL statement would normally be due for payment.
