Im very conflicted. Many guys say gtx and many say mono sae 40. Some say diesel oil.
I have no idea what to follow. I have read the threads on oil but still im very conflicted. We have a wider aray of ambient temp differences as supposed to Europe
Advice?

Re: 1975 & '79 Bay Busses
Have always used Shell Helix Diesel HX5 15W-40 Motor Oi or even the new Caltex Delo® Gold Ultra Multigrade
SAE 15W-40 (API CI-4) as the aircooled runs at high temp. same as the diesel.
So I am sure the oil will not break down at high load.
15 W 40 or even 20 W 50 is fine for our climate.

Re: 1975 & '79 Bay Busses
Good day so I'm going to be doing the oil change and set the tappets tonight.
I have done some research and what I can establish is that the tappets should be set to .15mm? is that with a cold engine?
thanks

Re: 1975 & '79 Bay Busses
The tappet clearance on both the 1600 and 2000 are 0.15 mm set cold.
Please note that the type 4 may have hydraulic lifters these are set different .
At TDC, you un-screw the adjuster till the rocker moves, then turn in adjuster, till it just contacts the valve stem, then turn it in further, by 1 and a half ( or two) full turns.
Most say 1 and a half turns, the book says two turns, I set mine to two turns, and it runs perfect. No noisy tappet.
Hope it helps

The old Delo was good for our engines. The new Delo isnt. I think they changed over midway in 2012retrovan wrote:Have always used Shell Helix Diesel HX5 15W-40 Motor Oi or even the new Caltex Delo® Gold Ultra Multigrade

Re: 1975 & '79 Bay Busses
Thanks guys. Did all type 4 motors have hydraulic lifters?
I went with a diesel 15w40 mineral oil.
Ps. Whats the verdict on the midas range of oils out of interestbi saw there is a small price difference. They call their range liquid gold?

Re: 1975 & '79 Bay Busses
VW started fitting hydraulic lifters in 1978, but not all engines had them in, some where removed by the owners, as they did not understand them, and could not accept the setting, a lot of other VW engines had them fitted when overhauled, by the guys that did understand them, so you can find them in any VW aircooled motor.
Just for the record, I fitted them into all the engines that I have had done up.
They work a treat, and you do not spend your life adjusting tappets all the time.
The Midas liquid gold range of oil is not bad, as it passes all the normal specifications of most manufactures.
You will find all the spec's on the label. I never buy oil by advertising hype, but only by lubrication spec.
Thats why you will never find a Castrol can in my work shop, if only they spent half the amount of money on upgrading their oil, instead of advertising ..........
