How much engine can you get for...

Post by The Rob »

As in the subject,

How much engine can you get for about R15,000? Lets say without an exhasut (we'll get to that later)

I have a compete 1600 VW engine (all machine work done) lying in the garage, also a roller crank. I was told that the roller crank is old tech, and not the greatest.

I could put this motor toegther and it'd be fine, but seeing that this was my very first car. I've always wanted a 2.0l motor or bigger in the car with dual carbs.

You've probably seen the ads on OLX for a perfomance motor for X amount of ronds http://pretoria.olx.co.za/vw-beetle-183 ... -772720160

So please advise what can I get if a VW mechanic/restorer to build me an engine? Or, if I buy all the parts and build the motor myself?

R15k can get you a well built stock 1600 engine from a reputable builder.

There are a few scammers selling "rebuilt" engines for less than the cost of the machining involved in a rebuild. I know nothing about the olx advertiser, but I would be very wary dealing with them.

Caveat emptor.

looking at the advert...
We can also upgrade your own

engine to a 1835 cc or 1977cc from R7500..
The piston kit will cost between 4K and 8K
machining to the block and heads without any further required mods will be about 2K
The entire engine still needs to be taken apart, new bearings, probably line bored and put back together...
labour alone will amount to 7500 if you supply them with all the parts needed...

as for your original question. A roller crank is old school and no longer considered to be worth more than their weight in scrap.

Done properly you can really have some good fun with a 1600 engine. 80 to 100hp isnt impossible without breaking the bank.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I think I'm going to stick with the 1600, seeing that I have a complete engine. Maybe I can still get the dual carbs that I always dreamed of. The car used to have 4 into 1 exhaust that came out just behind the right reat wheel. Made a lekker sound. Will try get one of those too.

Just some building rennovations to my house, then sell a motorbike or two, then I'll have the space and bucks to finally get on this project.

And as for the roller, maybe some where out there is a oke that wants it.

Our VdubTECH motors are All Alighned bored,All components balanced(Rotating Parts) lightened Fly wheel ,C25 Cam Profile for better low down torq and Re bored with new Pistons(Not MAhle :D ) proper recon Heads all on Exchange for just over R15K on Exchange

Now you ad a Center Mount 36DCD Webber and Proper Exhaust System and You will not believe it is a 1600 motor when it is properly run inn as the Balancing , Flywheel and
Cam help the Bigger carb and Exhaust to work nicely

Due to the Fact that Air cooled motors parts Machining and Labor is so Expensive nowadays this Package we do is a winner
