The value of an air fuel ratio meter

Post by 1964type1 »

Good day,

A few weeks ago I bought a Zeitronix A/F meter/ logger/ gauge set to determine the state of tune for my Beetle engine.

Firstly, I can recommend Fuel performance as a supplier to any person. Their service is excellent.

Getting to the product itself. It comprises a logging unit, data cable, gauge, lambda sensor and weld-in bung.

With the bung welded into the exhaust(I did it just after the collector) it is an absolute doddle to jury rig the system for testing purposes. The gauge gives you an instant read-out of the AF ratio so it is simple to visually confirm correct tuning but you can also hook it up to your laptop for a real time graph or you can in fact also datalog to see how the engine transitions from the idle to the main circuit.

WIth the help of this little system I was able to see that the jetting on my vehicle was in fact overly rich and not lean as first suspected. This made it easy to change jets until I got the perfect AF ratio for all conditions.

It makes a huge difference to performance running an engine at the right AF ratio.

My beetle now goes like a scalded cat and will easily break traction in first gear. I have rather sticky 205/55R15 Michelin Pilot rubber on the car so this is no easy task.

I can really recommend investing in a setup like this, especially if you are running dual carbs. It will save you many hundreds of rands in jets and the beauty of the system is you can always use it on your next project and the next so it pays for itself fairly quickly.
