People,
I'm wanting a set of these. They are the standard size Chrome hubcap, and fit the following:
68-79 Type1 Bug
71-79 Type2 Bus
66-73 Type3
67-74 Karmann Ghia
These seem to be made of unobtanium in South Africa. They cost anywhere between R 200 to R 300 new overseas from the US and UK. But the price almost doubles for postage and shipping, and import duties.
Does anyone know any suppliers who have these in SA, at the same retail price of R 300 to R 350 each? I'm ready to buy 4 of them right now. However I believe the EMPI ones are not good quality, so preferrably looking for a better quality Hubcap.
Alternatively, as Muds and a few other people do, is there any other confirmed interest in getting a full set from other people? I can then look at possibly buying a bulk package and we all share postage costs?
Will wait to hear feedback and decide what route to go from there.
cheers
Alan

Re: VW Hubcaps - Anyone got, or interested in a bulk buy?
I would just buy the EMPI ones for 300 bucks a pop and be done with it if I were you. I bought a set of smoothies from FFR and they look great.
They might be made from slightly thinner material than the original, but then what isn't these days? Very few products these days are made to last a lifetime. So the chance of getting a new hubcap of the same quality as the original is very slight.
Look at it this way, if you buy the cheapies from EMPI and in a few years the chrome peels off, you can have them rechromed. They will look as good as an original. If you look for a set of secondhand caps, it is quite likely that they will need some panelbeating, and maybe even a rechrome, if you want them to look perfect. You might get lucky and find a decent second hand set around, but you don't know how long you'll have to wait. I know I'm way too impatient

Brazilian and Mexican hubcaps are available new and they are thicker than EMPI
Granted, they will work out to double the price...
