any rear fenders will fit. VW never changed the bolt pattern or flange shape for their rear fenders, so anything from '48 to 78 is interchangeable. This gives you more options if you dont need it 100% period correct

You have mentioned this to me before, I do have another set of rear fenders from a later beetle but they also require some work en welding.
I would really like to use the ones with the dimples that came off the beetle but they were hold together with putty.
Think I will need to go dig them out and have a look.
Thanks Heron but the hard work is still ahead getting that body sorted.

Re: Betty the Oval - Donovan D - ex-MINCE
The only thing that changes from one model to the next is the tail light holes or recessions.
My split has recessions, but your Oval has its own format of holes that is different to the newer Beetles.
If you weld up the holes in a new fender, and re-drill the new holes as per your snowflake lights.

Donovan,
Found a place that sells the rear fenders that would look good on your car for a fair price. They are about R900-00 a piece, but import is just a little high. VW Heritage in the UK. Great fit and they look superb. They even have the ribs on the mounting surface as per the 1950-1960 beetles. They look the part. As Herman mentioned, the holes can be made for your snowflake lights. Sometimes better to just bite the bullet and chew it and buy new fender than trying to fix old fenders. Been there tried that and made a hell of a mess...LOL!
Good luck moving forward,

Re: Betty the Oval - Donovan D - ex-MINCE
I get what you're saying,
Doing some work on the kombi this weekend and will have a look at the extra pair of fenders.
I have come to realise that the goal I set myself with this beetle is drifting and it won't be to the standard I wouldve liked.
Biggest thing is the body and the repairs needed. The pan is ready, everything is ready to go on except for an engine. Besides that I still need to sort out upholstery.
I bought a house in December and the funds I specifically set aside for the beetle is making its way into things on the house as the project is at a stand still due to bodywork that needs to start happening, and I need to open the Kombi engine and don't know what's going to creep out there.

Hey ! That looks Nice....
As long as it keeps moving, some times slow, sometimes fast, but it will get there in the end.....
Keep up the good work.

Re: Betty the Oval - Donovan D - ex-MINCE
Is this a normal size gap between the bonnet and the body ? I cant remember this gap being so big.

Re: Betty the Oval - Donovan D - ex-MINCE
Donovan, I am sure you can get it better with final adjustment.
Make sure before you paint if the big hole in the quater pannel should be there, the one near where the fuse box mount.

That should be for the speedo tube.

Re: Betty the Oval - Donovan D - ex-MINCE
Which hole are you referring to ? I think the three hole one is the one for the speedo, the bigger one I have no clue. Whats the two smaller holes for ?

Am I missing something between the steering wheel and the shaft ? If I push the steering shaft through the outer tube and attach the steering Im unable to turn the wheel.
The steering shaft itself is also bent, Im guessing this should be straight but its bent in such a way that I'm second guessing it.

Re: Betty the Oval - Donovan D - ex-MINCE
I was referring to the big hole in front. Yes, the rear one is for the speedo tube. Think the big one in front was drilled for the indicator wiring when indicators was fitted on the fenders at some stage. The two small ones in front is for the fuse box.
