I'd like to BUMP this thread.
I'm wanting to improve by Bus's performance. I cannot seem to find any workshops in the Cape Town area capable of doing a conversion, or even advertising them. I'm keep to go a Suby conversion possibly, also 2.1 watercooled with a 5 speed box etc.
Does anyone here know of a workshop in Cape Town that can do these types of builds? (eg: JT Conversions, etc)

Re: Good or bad idea
Thanks Jolas, Nico told me of a good old mechie out his way, but there's no one really publically advertising such conversions anymore.. Look, I realize the busses are few and far between, but surely there are workshops who do other types of mechanical stuff that could do this? I'm def not mechanically minded enough, or have the space, or the energy to do this myself.. I do have a budget after selling my Speedster, but it's like searching for hens' teeth.

Allan you will need to find someone who has a proven record when it comes to this type of conversion or you will be pulling your hair and wallet out more often than you would like to. best would be to find some one who has been through all the teething problems and ended up with the right set up.
Just my opinion.

Re: Good or bad idea
I totally agree, thats why I'm struggling to find someone, and thus was hoping someone here might have already had dealings with such a crowd. I got hold of a chap who was at Bugjam last yesr, fitted a Scoobie engine in a Sandmaster\rail car, and he wasn't interested at all. Audi\VW workshops in Montague gardens aren't interested, but we've seen, or heard of conversions all over the place.. So, thus the post.

Re: Good or bad idea
My 2c on this , guys want to complicate things more than its needed , the adaptors for almost any w/c motor to vw box are available to buy of the shelf the engines are easy to find and mounting a rad is not rocket science . I have seen many conversions out there and yes some are a little more "elegant" than others but even the bad ones seem to work . The internet is packed full of pics and build threads and aftermarket management systems are easy to source, depending on your budget you can get allot of exstra value from a good system . This is not what I did but in hindsight you dont have to spend heaps of cash on custom rads ect , there are off the shelf items that work just as well for half the price. I am fortunate that I like the mechanical side of owning a old car and do all the work on my own cars but you should not have to find a "specialist" to do one of these any half decent mechanic should be able to bolt the adaptors/motor ect together and make a bracket to hold a rad and waterbottle .
My biggest fear is that my wife sells my cars for what i told her they cost !!
