Beetle Engine & Chassis Number

Post by FreddeVilliers »

I recently bought a "1972" Beetle 1300 Single Port, which was previously owned by a 90 year old lady from the Free State. I am told the engine is original, but need help in verifying this. As far as I can tell, the car is a 1970 model. Can anyone help? The engine number is SFABR214251 and VIN is 1112137588. The colour is bright green, and the upholstery black leatherette. Is there any way of telling whether it is all original?

Welcome to ACVWSA Freddy. As per your welcome mail, please tell us a bit about yourself in the New Members thread.

The VIN is for a 1971 model year Beetle (8/70-7/71). It was likely first registered in 1972.

The R in the engine number says that the case was replaced at some point and restamped with the same engine number (except for the addition of the R), so your engine is not the original. It seldom is on any ACVW.

Thanks. Is there any way of knowing whether this engine (without the R) was originally fitted to this chassis? And whether the body paint colour and trim are original? I tried to contact VWSA, but no luck.
