Afternoon Hennie
To go back to air cooled will cost you 10 x more than just to repair or buying a second hand gearbox.
The gearbox you are looking for is a 5 fin in other words around the casing there are 5 x segments, That tells you it is either for a 1800 or 2 liter motor and they are way stronger than the 1600 standard box.
I searched for one and it took me three years to find one. I paid R3500 for it. Now i'm saving up to have it rebuild by BUGGER TRANSMISSION and the cost might be in the region of R12000 to R15000.
A reconditioned 1600 or 2 liter motor complete (new carbs, alternator, clutch, fly wheel, exhaust, oil cooler and then the sub assembly) will cost between R25000 and R40000. It is a myth that KOMBI spares are cheap.Trust me it is very expensive cause VW don't make spares for aircooled any more.

If you can find a rebuild gearbox with a warranty you are looking at R15000 plus.

But don't be discouraged.Start searching.Read in the guest forum about where i bought mine and contact Dishan cause he have a couple of 5 fin auto boxes available that will work perfect with that V6.
Nice day

I'm running 3 Bay windows, all of them with Ford V6 conversions. Two of the kombi's have 3 fin 1600 boxes, and one has a 5 fin 2L box. To date I have not had any gearbox problems, and the kombi's go out on rental regularly. I'm sure at some point I'll need to redo a box, which is why I found a 5 rib box which I'll have rebuilt and on standby. Gearboxes are out there, you just need to look...

Hi Derek.
Agree 100% with you. Will not change back to air cooled for anything. As he mentioned he got the Bus on that day so maybe the previous owner killed the box.
Even if you have to catch a taxi to bloem. Go and buy that box.
nice day
PS. Take some rain with you then you might get a discount
