Hi all, just found this forum( many thanks to Google), what a luck!! I'm Paul, resident in Cresta, and have just aquired my latest beetle, a '72? 1300. Very rough at the moment, bad paint, surface rust here and there, and battery box rusted through. Mechanics seem sound, but has charging and electrical issues, so lots of fun!! Still deciding on what look to give her, but am in no rush, will be a work in progress for a good while yet, first to get registered and mobile. Looking forward to much conversation and collaboration.

Hi all I live in Cape Town , new to this forum I am 18 at the end of March and I really want a Kombi for my first car , I don't know if that's a smart decision or not but I absolutely love them being my first car of coarse I can't spend a lot on it my budget would max at about 80k but the thing is I am not too mechanically minded as I havnt had a car yet, I realise that being an old car it will break down but I am hoping for a bay panel or normal window in good nick inside and out and engine wise I don't really know what's best but I'm basically looking for a Kombi that is as reliable as they come , my plan is to put a bed in the back my dad will work on it with me as a father son project and decorate the inside, the perfect car for an 18 year old guy Any advice would help and any direction on what i should be looking for would be much appreciated also where to look ?

Hi gentlemen it's lovely to be on the forum, I love the baywindow kombis with the type4 2.0L engine infact I'm building one, I'm sure there's lots of interesting topics on here and good advice Aswell, a topic that caught my eye is one from a gent selling a type 4 engine with magirus deutz sleeves and chevy V8 pistons, that's exactly what I want to do, I just need to know what it all entails to actually fitting them and which magirus deutz motor the sleeves come from, any advice on that would be magic thanks guys

Hi Everybody.

I live in JHB and am quite new to the VW scene. I am in the process of negotiating a purchase price on a VW Bus 1974 1800 Bay Westfalia (Camper interior) with the intention of turning it into a family weekend vehicle. I will definitely need help fixing it up.

Any guidance i.t.o price considering that it is running but need some body work and a definite interior revamp?

rowantype4, AFAIK, all Deutz engines use 101mm pistons and sleeves.

StephanZA, any Westfalia is worth at least double what an equivalent kombi in similar condition is worth. The value of a specific bus depends on configuration, overall condition, completeness and originality. Without seeing the bus, no one can give you a real idea of value. A 1974 Westfalia (if it really is a 74) would be a very rare bus in SA and would most likely be LHD. Westfalias were sold in SA for the models years 1970 through 1973. If the bus you're looking at is an SA westy it's more likely a 73 or earlier, which would have originally had a 1600 or 1700 engine. 1800 engines would have been correct for a 74, so it may be one.

You say it needs an interior revamp. If any of the interior kit needs to be replaced, it will seriously devalue the bus. There are a few westies out there that have had their interiors replaced and, IMO, they are worth no more than an ordinary kombi.

Thank you for the feedback. So, a bit more history on this Wesfalia. It is the Hard Top model and is indeed RHD. The vehicle was bought by my wife's father (NEW) and was registered in Zimbabwe / Rodesia. It then came to SA through family and is now registered here. We have now agreed on terms to buy it back so it is back in the original family . Where can I take it to confirm all these little details?

The interior is pretty good but as a bus that stood for many many years, definitely needs some attention. Maybe just me wanting to clean it up a but . I would say more wear than anything else. From your comments I gather that you are not in favour of a revamp of such interiors?

Post some pics of your bus in the My Ride forum and we can see what you have and if it's original.

Whether I'm in favour of an interior revamp is not the point. If any Westfalia furniture is missing or replaced with non-original stuff then the bus is devalued. That has nothing to do with my opinion. If the bus is worth more to you (as the owner, rather than the seller) with a rebuilt interior, then go right ahead and do whatever you want. Just be aware that a tatty, original, Westfalia interior is worth a lot more than the best homebuilt interior.

Hi all.I live in Bedfordview Gautengaleng and i have been driving Beetles for the last 30 years but have decided 3 years ago to upgrade to a live long dream a Baywindow Bus.
Found one in springs for 5 grand with a CHEVY 2.5 motor in that haven't been started since the day the owner have put that motor in cause he didn't read on the manifold what the firing order was, and numerous other problems but i think the main one was "BLACK LABEL". He runs a SHEBEEN from his property also.
He made the sliding door BARN STYLE with big ass hinges and duck-tape. Will post some pics next week of what it looked like then and now.
I love this project but i have so much more to learn

Hi All. I am Allen de Bruin, new to the group and VW Aircoolers.

Curently looking into rebuild customized restore options for a 1972 Beetle, as example a '62 big fender build body onto restored '72 chassis.
It's has standard 1600 twin port motor that needs lots of TLC and which it will get with help from friend.

I was wondering if one can fit in a VW Polo 1.2 TSI motor and gearbox together with ECU and wiring to the beetle?
Any suggestions and advice will be appreciated.
Also add suggestions on other modification required for the TSI motor and gearbox?

What alternative performance engines could be fitted excluding Saburu, Porche and Mazda Rotery engine could be considered?

Just purchased a 1969 Beetle. Good condition, needs some TLC. Not much, very happy with my purchase.

Don't think this will be my only one that I will be purchasing.
Anyway, from Cape Town, looking forward on my future journey's and memories with my volksie!
