You will find it have disk brakes up front, IRS in the rear, and most probably fuel injection as well. I think I've only seen about 3 in South Africa so far...

Very funnily enough, there was an old man here in my locality who had a 1971 Type 3 Fastback, German Spec!!

I saw it a few times and made an offer at the beginning of the year, but lately the car and the owner have vanished

It was a bit neglected and was leaking oil out of every orifice and the car was resprayed by a amateur

According to the old man, it had something like 600k on the clock, he was driving it from 1980

The biggest clincher for me was the IRS rear end and front discs

I'm going to make some inquiries as to the present whereabouts, would like to know what happened to it

Personally, I feel that the pre '70 models are far more attractive and I would love to find an Automatic Fastback-IRS rear

Posted these pics of another imported Type 3 Fasty on 11 September last year:

Snapped these (crappy mobile phone) pics of a lovely imported Type 3 Fastback Saturday afternoon in the parking area of a shopping centre. Note the different location of the VW badge on the nose, the wide Type 4-ish bumpers, the large tail and front indicator lenses. Whereas the Type 3 was replaced by the Type 4 in South Africa in 1969, production continued in other parts of the world, albeit with these discreet updates and modernifications

The car that I was referring to is exactly the same colour, unfortunately I cannot remember the registration number

I now have a good chassis in my possession

It needs some work, has some rust, but the pans etc are solid

It has a gaping hole where the battery normally lives, but other than that a couple of hours work should see looking decent again...

The next hard to find part is the windscreen

I can sand off all the old paint and start with the spraying this week

Okay, here goes...

At the moment, the car is standing outside under a makeshift cover

I already have most of the parts needed for the rebuild, with the exception of the windscreen. I had the chassis at a welder's place last month, but brought it back as he is a bit too busy to do it now and the chassis was under serious threat of being appropriated for scrap metal

Ideally, I'd like to have this car painted and rolling on the new chassis by the end of December, but we'll see how things go. I'm still undecided as to how I should build this car i.e stock look with a few tricks, race look or GermanLook etc etc. I'll probably make up my mind once I start working on the car again...

In the meanwhile, my intention is to get the '68 fastback up and running in the next month or so, drive it a while with a big smile, then do the disk brake and turbo engine conversion shortly after that. I'll probably start a project thread very soon.
