Tyres

Post by freddiebooysen »

Hi guys need some advice

My 1974 beetle is in for mechanical repairs and i need t get the tyres sorted as well
My guy says the best will be to keep the rostyles and stick with the tyre size 165 80 R 15 but those ones are quite expensive apparently around R 1600 .00 a tyre is this correct ?
i do not want to skimp on these since they are important for safety

Almost as expensive as the other tyres on my family sedan !!

Can i go wider he recons i will make it more difficult to drive which makes sense to me ?
Can i go thinner at all 155 maybe ?

Any suggestions on where i will find these at a reasonable prise?
i still have to try and phone around tomorrow but wanted to check in before i start my search.

Hi Freddie,
I have just ordered online from Errols tyres.
They have three different ones but I took the Nankang's @ 965.00 each.

The 165x65xR15's should be fine, we have some on our '68 and they are great.

Managed to source some kumho tyres with the period correct size for the beetle. Will pick them up after the 16th when I have funds available again R940.00 ea. At supaquick special order. Well it takes a day to get to them so not really so special order.
Local one is friendly and very helpful and I looked around best price as well.

Hey Guys

Sorry to kinda hijack the thread. Got a set of 195/65/15" Tyres all round on my 67 beetle standard suspension. They seem to be rubbing a bit on the inside wall. The 165/65/15" options sounds like a better fit but they are pretty hard to find. I have however found a set of 185/65/15. These would be slightly narrower but will they still rub ?

Regards
Rowan

Is it the tyre or the rims that are rubbing?
As soon as you go up to 7J rims, you have issues with them hitting the suspension.
I had 185's on a 6J rim in the 90's and they didnt rub at all. Stepping up to 195s on a 7J rim is where my troubles started. Then putting 215s on a 7.5J rim just made it much worse.

Hey
The rims came with the beetle when i bought them as well as the tyres. As far as i know its the tyre as you can see the scuff marks around the inside of the tyre. Rims should be standard 15" size as per my knowledge.
